Atlanta Accused of Failing to Spend $41M in Federal HIV Funds

Contractors claim the city’s AIDS housing program has not reimbursed them, leaving clients at risk for homelessness.

The City of Atlanta is under fire for reportedly failing to spend $41 million in funds supplied by the federal government to provide housing to people living with HIV/AIDS, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. As a result, 250 clients could experience homelessness.

The figure represents nearly 40% of the $101 million that has been supplied by the federal government since 2014, according to numbers from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

For Women With HIV, Unstable Housing Is Linked to Poorer Health Outcomes

Among HIV-positive women, being unstably housed is associated with a higher chance of having an unsuppressed viral load and an inadequate CD4 count, aidsmap reports.

Publishing their findings in Social Science & Medicine, researchers studied data on 3,082 participants of the Women’s Interagency HIV Study who received medical care for HIV between 1995 and 2015 at sites in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Chicago, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

HUD Renews Nearly $24M in Grants for HIV/AIDS Housing Programs

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) renewed a total of $23.8 million in grants over a three-year period to local HIV/AIDS housing programs, according to a HUD press release.

The funding will help more than 1,700 low-income people living with HIV and their families. It’s distributed through HUD’s Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program, which was created in 1992.

Daniel W. Tietz became CEO of Bailey House in October 2017. The New York City–based nonprofit organization serves more than 1,800 men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses through housing, health services and community support. 

For our March issue, POZ spoke with Tietz about Bailey House’s 35 years of housing people living with HIV/AIDS and its future.
