The Interviews of Romania’s Craftspeople: Potter Alina Iorga
Between 2020 and 2022, I interviewed over 20 craftspeople to study the phenomenon of traditional crafts disappearance in Romania. Peasant fairs are organized all over the country. If you’d like to visit one while in Bucharest, check out the Facebook page of the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant or its Instagram account.
Impressions from the pottery village Horezu and nearby Olari. In Romanian Olari means Potter and most of the people here are involved into this century old business that reflect generations of knowledge and craftsmanship. The history of Horezu’s ceramics is closely entwined with that of the nearby Horezu Monastery, which was built by Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu in 1690. By inviting artists and craftsmen from all over the world to apply their skills to building his monastery, the prince introduced a variety of new influences to rural culture. Local artisans were also #horezu#pottery #crafts #handmade #ceramics https://www.instagram.com/p/CdzzuR4shrK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
HOREZU județul Vâlcea
"the place where the earth takes shape",
HOREZU CERAMICS too called-The pottery is an old occupation that has been practiced since ancient times, testimony standing the beautiful ceramic pots from the Neolithic era, a time when on the territory of Romania a remarkable civilization developed.
Pottery is an activity that involves physical force. The formation of the vessel requires a special technique and a high speed of work, because the paste does not have to dry (sometimes the shape of the vessel is realized even in 40-50 seconds). After molding, the dishes are left to dry for a few days, in the shade and then burned in special ovens, after they have been previously ornamented and eventually glazed (at the blides only the inside and the edges are polished). Horezu is famous for the red clay, with an individual chromatic color, which has never been found elsewhere.
All roads lead back. Back in time! Lut, ceramics, fabrics, manual processing and decoration techniques open your doors to the beautiful soul, the one born from human hands Here, in Horezu, the potter and many other Romanian specific handicraft activities have kept their roots deep at the level of art. Beautiful people, feel the air, peace a beautiful landscape that helps you connect to nature. A Weekend with a new unique experience this time in Romania
