Franchise Retrospective: Friday the 13th To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story When you hear the name Kane Hodder you almost immediately think of Jason. And probably for a lot of people when you hear the name Jason you think of Kane Hodder. Widely regarded as the definitive Jason, a fan favorite, and the only person to play the icon more than once Kane Hodder and Jason are synonymous, their stories forever entwined. While Tom Savini's doc Smoke and Mirrors comes across as more of a celebratory history of the man, Kane's doc digs way down deep behind the mask and makeup to present us with an honest and, frankly, incredibly vulnerable look at a man who's responsible for many of our sleepless nights. I'll tell you right now, no lie, I had tears in my eyes hearing Kane, in his own words, talk about his accident which caused his horrible burns and recounting his long road to recover. It's a heartbreaking story and it's told damn well. Of course part of that recovery is Kane eventually landing the role he would become known for, Jason Voorhees. Buts there are many ups and downs in life and Kane opens up about his disappointment in losing the iconic role, which he equates with being just as painful as his earlier accident. But Kane's endless determination and drive ultimately lands him the opportunity to create a whole new horror icon of his own, Victor Crowley. You honestly don't even need to be a horror fan to enjoy this doc, Kane's openess regarding his trials is inspiring regardless of who you are. Ultimately his story of overcoming adversity is more important than just putting on the hockey mask. It truly is a wonderful documentary about an inspiring human being and well worth checking out. Franchise Retrospective: Friday the 13th Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini Filmmaking is obviously a collaborative art and while there are many people credited with the success of Friday the 13th it could be argued that Tom Savini is one of if not the most responsible. F13 doesn't have necessarily a great story, it isn't a work of technical brilliance, but it's sfx not only hurled this independent production into the stratosphere but inspired a legion of slasher films to copy it's onscreen carnage. It's easily F13's most enduring legacy. But while he's such a huge component to the success of the Friday franchise, those films themselves are only a blip in the long and storied career of the fx master. Here we take a look at the life and work of one of the most recognizable and important names in Special Effects Makeup. For horror fans who can never get enough this doc is a fun look at not only some behind the scenes moments of our favorite films but what inspired the man who created all of these legendary cinematic nightmares. Tom's personal life dictates many of his creative choices and this doc offers plenty of insight into that process. For many Tom Savini seems like the rockstar of horror films but in reality he's incredibly humble and jovial, always there to lighten the mood and have fun while also cutting people's heads off in some gruesome fashion. Franchise Retrospective: Friday the 13th Friday the 13th (NES) What the fuck am I supposed to say? That we're all in this together and we'll get through this together? We're not and we won't. Why? Because I just played F13 for NES and I have no hope left for this world. I haven't left my house in over a month yet I have access to nearly countless hours of books, movies, and videogames but here I am wasting hours, PRECIOUS HOURS, of my life that I will never get back. I could have taught myself to bake, instead I spent 45 minutes throwing rocks in a perfect arc just over the heads of zombies until I got a message saying "All your friends are dead." I could have taken this time to start an exercise regimen that would ultimately make me buff as hell. In actuality I spent that time trying to box a purple Jason Voorhees, Mike Tyson Punch-Out style. I could have finally gone through the boxes of stuff left over from when my grandmother died and pray that I don't accidentally stumble across some weird "sex" stuff but what I was doing was getting lost inside a fucking house with only 4 walls like I was in goddamn House of Leaves. I could have learned to play the trumpet but... no actually I couldn't have learned to play the trumpet. It's really hard and I don't have the proper embouchere. Anyway this game sucks. Like I get the idea behind it, it sounds like it should be cool but it isn't. It's confusing and weird and bad. It's very bad and brought me to a dark place when the world is pretty much collectively in a dark place and that's not cool. Franchise Retrospective: Friday the 13th Crystal Lake Memories (film) Oh I'm sorry, was an hour and a half not good enough for you? Ok then well how about nearly 7 hours? Is that long enough. 6 hours and 40 minutes to be exact. That's how long this documentary is and if you have the blu-ray there's even more. While "His Name Was Jason" was just dipping a toe into the ocean that is the Friday the 13th franchise this documentary is where it's at for all you mega Jason Voorhees nerds (myself included). Focusing on each entry, going one by one, this doc gives an incredibly detailed look into the making of and behind the scenes of this beloved franchise. Including many of the actors and filmmakers this one gets down to the nitty gritty with tons of interviews and behind the scenes footage you've probably never seen before. The MPAA notoriously hacked this franchise to pieces so hearing directly from the fx people and their struggles during the making of each film was fascinating and this doc even gives you a rough look at some of the kills left on the cutting room floor. I've always wished these films could have been fully restored of their original gorey goodness but we'll have to take these behind the scenes and work print rough cut glimpses for now. Franchise Retrospective: Friday the 13th His Name Was Jason Hey, are you a huge Friday the 13th nerd? I am. Have you watched all 12 movies in the franchise yet still crave more? Yes, absolutely! Well here's a feature length documentary celebrating 30 years of Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th franchise just for you! Most docs about films are just bonus features on a dvd or blu-ray (Hey, remember physical media?) but you know horror fans are a different type of nerd, a more hardcore nerd, and seriously comprehensive deep-diving nerd that will buy separately and watch a feature length movie that is solely about another movie, horror fans take their shit seriously. This is a lot of fun and definitely worth checking out. It focuses more on the definitive traits of the franchise, what makes a Friday the 13th film Friday the 13th, and what exactly makes Jason tick. There's a lot of ground to cover so it runs quickly through the series and establishes the key players then it's broken down into segments and all the filmmakers, actors, and fans weigh in on topics like the sfx, the kills, the final girls (and guys), Jason Voorhees himself, and the franchise's legacy. There's definitely more comprehensive media regarding Friday the 13th (oh we'll get there) but as far as something thats easily digestible in one sitting then this is definitely the way to go. Tales from the Budget Pack The Manster I was watching Garagehouse Picture's Trailer Trauma blu-ray (an awesome collection of vintage horror film trailers) and got in the mood for some good ol' Drive-In B-movie flicks. If you're a horror fan like I am then I'm sure you have a half a dozen at least of those public domain budget packs with like 20 movies in them. (so you probably have like 4 different copies of Dementia 13 or The Terror). I have a massive 200 film one I got from Amazon and I know I'll probably never make it through the whole thing but figured it's time I start diving into it more so here's a random series I'd like to call "Tales From the Budget Pack!!" First film is The Manster. Why did I choose this one? Easy. It's called The Manster. That's it. Like you know the screenwriter was like "hmm he's a monster but also he's a man... holy shit, Greg, he's a Manster!" FUCKING genius! So it takes place in Japan, it's got an evil scientist experimenting on humans, so far so good. The experiment changes our main character into a monster (ahem... manster) and but it's not like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde or The Wolf Man. Like this monster starts growing out of our main character physically and it starts with an eye growing out of his shoulder and then a second head and HOLY SHIT this film influenced Army of Darkness!!!! That's actually kinda cool. By all means this looks like it's the kinda film MST3K would make fun of but it's actually a couple notches better than that. It's ridiculous in all the right B-movie kinda ways. The dude not only turns into a monster but it turns him into an asshole and he just keeps cheating on his wife and the poor woman is just like "Oh I guess I'll just have to move to Japan and wait for him to get tired of fucking all these Japanese sex workers and eventually come back to me because I love him." Seriously it's pretty nuts and hella fun. Brahms: The Boy 2 Ya know, I didn't hate the first one. It was kinda fun and had a decent enough twist. In fact it was a twist that, well, kinda had me wondering how exactly they were gonna make a sequel but fuck it I have an open mind. Right away this film is about dealing with trauma. The boy in this film is dealing with the trauma of witnessing a violent home invasion and his mother, Katie Holmes, is dealing with the trauma of surviving the prison of belief that is Scientology. (Fun Fact: the Brahms doll is the same height as Katie Holms' ex-husband and Operating Thetan level VIII Tom Cruise) At this point in the review I'd just like to say "hi" to to Helena Kobrin, the Scientology lawyer in charge of scouring the internet and suing anyone who badmouths the religion. It's nice to know that at least one person will be reading this. "Hey Helena, where's Shelly Miscavige?" Where were we? Oh yeah. The movie ends up being a pretty generic haunted doll film that unfortunately tries to have its cake and eat it too. They chose to undo what little goodwill the previous film had in order to turn this into a franchise. It's a bummer and a shame and retroactively hurts the previous film. Also fuck this "haunted doll" shit. Gimme a LIVING doll that actually moves. I miss Chucky and Dolly Dearest, you know, a nasty motherfucker that'll bite your ankles. Oh well. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Part 1 Welcome to this 5 part series where I take a deep dive into the twisted minds of some of cinema's most reprehensible serial killers. The following films will all be bleak character studies but these aren't your normal schlock exploitation films, most will have a (though debatable) artistic flourish. We're searching for the lowest depths of the high brow. Welcome to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy! I'm sure this series will have no negative repercussions to my mental health. Schramm Listen I always try to put a trigger warning for any type of sexual violence (here's your upfront warning: this whole series is gonna be rough) so while I was prepared for the worst it turns out nothing can prepare me for SELF INFLICTED GENITAL MUTILATION IN EXTREME CLOSE-UP! I'm pretty sure I shot back up inside myself like a turtle. Jorg Buttgereit (Hey isn't that guy running for president?) is no stranger to the depths of depravity in cinema (he's made not just one but TWO films about necrophilia). Shot on 16mm giving the film a documentary feel yet edited in a fragmented narrative this feels like Henrey Portrait of a Serial Killer as an experimental art film. Told in a series of memories flooding through the mind of a dying man, we're given a first hand look into not just some horrific murders but also Buttgereit's favorite topic, a twisted and perverse sexuality. There's a surreal nightmarish vagina monster with a beard in this and I'm pretty sure that's all I see now when I close my eyes. The fractured nature of the story allows much to be hidden, nothing is spelled out, and the leads honest and raw performance all add up to an incredibly uncomfortable (I have a feeling I'm gonna be using this word alot) unfettered look into a mind riddled by true darkness.
