Day 9 of #28daysofblackcosplay gets a little sexy. It’s GENterns from the horror musical: Repo! The Genetic Opera. This movie is what actually kicked off my love for cult horror films (sorry Rocky Horror) as a matter of fact it’s cause of the Graverobber of the film, @terrance.zdunich that I even got the nickname “Nil”. He even proclaimed me as his very first fan. What an honor! Once I found out Shadow Casts had been formed for the movie I knew I had to be apart of it! That’s when I became a GENtern. Also back when I had the body to show it off. I was almost always the GENtern who dies in the number “Mark it Up” lol. I played one of the sexy, highly skilled, highly disposable nurses and preached the good word of Zydrate for nearly 5 years. What a fun time at the theater. And though it was for theater performances. Yes, I do count it as cosplay. Cosplay made by me. As a Black cosplayer, I’ve long since realized that black cosplayers in the community don’t get there just dues and appreciation for the work they do. We are always called “variants” or “(insert character name) if they were black”. I think it’s time we break that negative stigma and show appreciation for cosplayers of color. Here’s a an Audrey II I made for our high school’s Little Shop of Horrors production in 2010 (yes my lovely X’s, it was 9 years ago!) I know way more about fabricating props now, but I still like it. I used a large cardboard Easter egg, cardboard, spray paint, puff paint and moss for the pod and some zombie fabric for the stem. The leaves were fabric I wired and sewed together. I laughed so hard my side still hurts! Had such a great time this weekend with friends and family celebrating my old ass!
