𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐥 I'm working on a new project that is a bit more mystical and spooky – a horror series full of twists and shock moments. To capture the mood, I also wrote a song for it. Here's a little snippet of it.

“Untitled, Unfinished Horror Song”
This piece is a bit different than the other three I’ve submitted so far this week. First of all, it’s not finished yet, so I apologize that it seems less polished than the others. However, this is definitely one of the most experimental songs I’ve done (though it may not sound like it). I’ve been delving into more advanced sound effect recording and editing techniques, and decided to apply then to instruments in my music. In this song, I used those techniques on the bells. When using recorded sound effects in video games, randomization is extremely important. For example, let’s say you recorded the sound of a shell casing falling to the ground after you fired a gun, and want to use that in a first-person shooter game. Rather than recording the shell casing falling to the ground five different times, you could record it once and have the game determine the pitch (among other aspects) of the shells falling to make it sound like you have five different recordings instead of just one. I used a similar effect with the bells in this song. The pitch of the bells is actually determined by the software I was using to make my music, not by me. Although this song probably won’t make it onto any albums or video games, I hope to use randomization techniques like this in the future to create interesting music, especially for horror games or movies. Usually every aspect of a musical composition is controlled by the composer, which gives it a very human element. However, with the randomization effect, it removes the sense of humanity from the music, giving it an eerie, inhuman element that’s perfect for horror.
When I was working on this song, I was picturing the mostly abandoned space station in the video game “Alien Isolation.” I tried to capture the feeling in the beginning of the game where the player sees breathtaking views of space out of the windows of the station, but there isn’t a soul in sight (and that is definitely not normal).
Thank you so much for listening to my music this week, and thank you to Musica in Extenso for featuring me!
