“ this is you thinking rationally? “
Jack and Gwen. In my mind Gwen is asking the question, but feel free to do the reverse
"Look, it's simple. Either both of us, and Rhys too by the way, sit the rest of this out in jail and let the whole world go to hell... or we go with the deal I brokered and let you and Rhys go back to Wales."
"It can't be that simple. We can get away, we can keep fighting..."
Jack's face was like stone, that eerie, dead-eyed calm he'd had ever since... ever since she'd seen him again this morning. Ever since Thames House. She refused to let herself think of it in any other terms than that.
"It is that simple, Gwen," said Jack. "We have to think rationally about this."
"This is you thinking rationally?!" her voice rose, sudden anger flashing through her. "Ianto's dead, Jack!" she pushed aside the guilt she felt for the way he flinched. "These people are all in this together, they're all collaborating with the creatures that killed him, and you want to make a deal with them? I can't believe you."
Jack clenched his jaw. At least it was something. "Leave it alone Gwen. You're going back to Wales, whether you like it or not. There's your baby to think about..."
"Shut up! Stop trying to protect me!" she felt tears down her cheeks, words tumbling from her mouth before she could stop them. "If... if I wasn't pregnant then you know full well I would've been in Thames House with you and Ianto, or instead of him maybe, and-"
"It should have been me-"
"Gwen. Stop. That's just the survivor's guilt talking, and you know it."
"Yeah? And what about your bloody survivor's guilt, eh Jack? You're hardly objective about this! Ianto was my best friend and I loved him, and you loved him too! And they killed him!"
Jack ground his teeth. "We can't fight the entire government while also taking on the 456, Gwen. Thames House proved that."
"You can't fight them alone either!" said Gwen, tears rolling down her face. "You can't send me off all nice and safe again..."
"You won't be safe, though," said Jack, looking incredibly tired. "You'll be home in Wales, but it's not safe. This is all over the world. When they give them the children again, it'll be everywhere."
"So, why not let me stay here with you? I want to be by your side, Jack!"
"Because of Ianto's family! It's like I said to Frobisher... Ianto's sister, Rhiannon. Someone needs to tell her, and it can't be me. And..." Jack dropped his voice. "She's got kids. If the worst happens..."
The realisation was like a blow to the chest. All her rage drained out of her, replaced with cold dread. "Oh..."
"I'll protect them," said Gwen, nodding. She threw her arms around Jack, pressing her face into the shoulder of his coat; the fabric was still crisp and new, not like his old one which had been worn soft by time. "Oh, Jack. ...How can I tell her he's dead? What do I even say?"
Jack stroked her hair, sounding weary again. "I don't know, Gwen. There's no good way to do it."
"I always bloody hated that bit, even when I was in the police." She was crying now, face buried in Jack's coat. Some part of her wondered if she'd ever stop, if she'd cry until she drowned them both. "It never, never gets easier."
"I know," sighed Jack, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "But I know you'll think of something."
