Three days ago I received the alarming message from the stable owner that my horse wasn’t able to walk and was in a lot of pain. That is one of the worst messages you can get as a horse owner.
Although leg injuries are the most common amongst horses, they are also the most deadliest ones. Unlike a dog or a cat, horses are unable to survive on three legs. So all leg injuries must be treated urgently.
My horse isn’t a young filly anymore, she is a senior. This means whatever injury, it will heal much slower and chances of a full recovery are much more slim.
Luckily my boss was most compasionate and allowed me to leave after I received the message. When I arrived at the stable I saw my horse standing almost frozen like on three legs. She was whining softly as she noticed me but seemed unable to move. I was prepared for the worst.
It is unfortunate that animals can’t explain what happened so the vet had to make assumptions. The good news was that nothing was broken or teared. There was however a huge trauma on the inside thigh muscle of her left hind leg. The injury even had caused an infection. And my horse even had a high fever because of it and due to the amount of pain she suffered.
My horse probably had rolled herself stuck in her stable or had either slipped somewhere.
Hopefully with a huge amount of rest, medication and care she will be all right. And even if I’m unable to ride her anymore, as long as she is in no pain, she can live her life and grow as old as her body is able to.
So, I won’t be online much this upcoming week as I will be visiting my horse several times a day to nurture her back to health.
Today, luckily the fever broke and she seemed more like her old self again. Also, she is able to walk again.
We’re slowly making progress and I hope she will be fully healed within the next few months.
