It's no surprise that the best-selling PC game of all time would create a competitive market for server hosting, and as such Minecraft server hosting became a booming business in the past few years. But with thousands of hosts on the market, each claiming to be the best, how can the discerning server owner pick the host that's right for them? When it comes down to it, the value of a host can be broken down into three categories: Performance, Features, and Reliability. Today, we'll be looking at Apex Minecraft Hosting and seeing how they stack up in these categories.
First, let's talk about performance. We played around on a 4gb test server supplied by Apex, and found it to be fairly lag-free. I did experience some slight lag, especially when using WorldEdit, but it wasn't significant. Aside from pushing the server limits with WorldEdit, the server ran at a pretty solid 20tps, which is standard. Our connection to the server was comparable to that of the Core Server, which experienced a minimum latency of 20ms less than the Core Server. It's clear, then, that Apex offers a competitive performance quality.
Next up are the features. Apex uses industry-standard Minecraft control panel software Multicraft for its servers. While most hosts change the colors of the Multicraft panel, Apex has created a completely new design for the page. I can't say that it's particularly better than the default layout, but it's certainly more colorful. Also, all the sidebar options are listed in one column without the need to expand any of the advanced options, which makes things easy to find. Apex's site itself is well-designed and tells potential customers everything they need to know on the homepage while allowing more curious users to explore further.
As for the server packages themselves, they come with all the standard features, such as a MySQL database, one-click mod installation, custom .jar support, custom subdomain, and more. Pretty much all the basic options are there. Apex is also focused on Minecraft itself and no other servers, meaning that you get a dedicated Minecraft evironment. The downside to this is you won't be able to add a voice server (i.e. Teamspeak) to your package. Server plans vary from 512MB to 6GB, at a rate of $6/GB/month. This rate is competitive, but not the cheapest on the market. You do, however, get unlimited storage space, which you don't get from all hosts. All plans are essentially the same, other than the amount of RAM you are given. The one exception is the Grass plan (512MB RAM), which only allows installation of Vanilla Minecraft. At $3/month, this plan is better suited for small communities, and is smaller and cheaper than most hosts. Apex even supports custom plans for larger communities that are available upon request.
Regardless of how great a host seems, unreliability can be a deal breaker. Apex has been around since 2009, according to their site, meaning they have years of experience in the market and should be around for a long time. The last thing you want is your server host disappearing on you. In terms of support, Apex offers live chat as well as ticket support, like many hosts. I can't speak for the responsiveness of their ticket support, but their live chat was fast and responsive. One thing that did catch my eye is that anyone can apply to be a live chat correspondent as long as they're over 12 years old. In return, Apex provides them with a free server. This is a bit troubling to me, as one would expect a live chat correspondent to be an actual employee of the company and not a 13-year-old. Still, my experience with the live chat was a positive one, so maybe there is little cause for concern. Lastly, their knowledgebase seems to be aimed more at amateur server owners, explaining things like how to upload their own worlds, how to change .jar files, etc. This is something many hosts overlook, and can be extremely valuable to inexperienced customers.
Overall, Apex seems like a great choice for server hosting. If you're a YouTuber or run a Minecraft site, I would recommend asking about their sponsorship program. You might be able to land a free Minecraft server in exchange for some advertising on your part. If you're new to the world of server hosting and are looking for a good host to start with, Apex might be exactly what you're looking for.
