Looking Up
SPOILER ALERT: In this post examining the film When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, I reveal the ending. And mention most of the key events. But I’m only giving you the aroma, not the meal itself. The first time I saw When a Woman Ascends the Stairs*, the title seemed a little ironic… …because: The main character of this movie wants to take a step up… …but fails with each try. The time is…

I was so excited when I walked past a girls club today like ... It's a club? Just for girls??? Cool! ... and then so disappointed when I did a quick Google search and it turned out to be a hostess bar. Urgh.
#RichJapan - Day 11
The four days leading up to my departure were jam-packed from early morning to evening. Severe fatigue set in which made it harder for daily updates of my journal. Instead of writing every day I’ve had to wait until now (the end of my trip) to share.
Memorable moments: - Landed a reservation at the very popular 3 star Michelin restaurant, Ginza Kojyo. Had to book one month in advance with the help of Japanese-speaking friends. Reservations with Michelin starred restaurants in Tokyo can only be booked by speaking Japanese. At one time Ginza Kojyo was ranked one of the top 50 restaurants in the world. 10 spots at a seated bar that overlooks the chef as he’s preparing each course. 11 course meal. The courses focused on different ways to serve eel. The food was good, but not sure it was worth the $$$$$ price tag. The $70 meal I had at Nicolas in Kyoto on Day 7 was way more memorable. The best part of the meal was the engaging conversation with the VP of our Tokyo office, Fred. We talked about the concept of time and the myth of charisma. More on Fred to come in later journal entries. He’s really a fascinating character. - Visited a hostess bar which was basically like a very expensive Hooters. The girls are fully clothed and you literally pay them just to talk to you while you sip over-priced sochu. While sitting at a table surrounded by the working girls, I did my best to educate them about intimacy and consent. Hoping it could be the start of a ripple effect, but think the concepts fell on deaf ears. Is this what Missionaries are all about? ;) Once again, I felt like I was being too “San Francisco” for Japan. Promise I was there just for the anthropology.
Places Visited: - Ginza Kojyu - Ginza neighborhood - The part of Tokyo with the most expensive real estate
