Jacaerys Velaryon's death will always be brutal but Vermax's was heart wrenching. The poor baby tried so hard to fly for him, and sunk down in pain and crying. Same with Sunfyre, the most beautiful dragon in history and with so much love for Aegon, only for him to take him unprepared into battle and get ripped in pain burned. And even then, Sunfyre died wrapped around his rider to protect him, just hours ago he had playfully nudged and cuddled him because he wanted to make him happy. The Targaryens never deserved their dragons who loved them so much. Their cries and pains will always hurt me so much more than any character death because they trusted their riders so much and instead they were taken to their painful death. They weren't war creatures, they were animals with love and feelings. And doomed by their riders who never actually loved their dragons as they should have.

In the greater scheme of things, this episode did well in highlighting the polarity that still exists between the two factions (as it should), despite any attempts by Rhaenyra and Alicent to find a common ground, bridge the gap, and understand each other again. Broken after the death of her son, Rhaenyra relies on Daemon during her grief and anguish and does something she immediately regrets. I would argue it's at that moment when she comes closest to understanding Alicent, because she finds herself compromising her own principles, surrendering to a force stronger than her own resolve, just as she has watched Alicent do before, when she found herself in a position where she had to betray her own ideals and succumb to a will stronger than hers.

Alicent, on her part, spends the entire episode issuing commands under borrowed authority: Helaena's, and whatever influence she can still claim as Dowager Queen. In doing so, she is forced to confront the fragility of power when it's not truly your own. I would argue that it's here when she comes closest to understanding Rhaenyra and the impossible burden of legitimizing her rule as a woman, and the necessity of gathering every ally, every ounce of support, simply to remain standing.

In that sense, Rhaenyra becomes Alicent's foil, and Alicent becomes Rhaenyra's. More than either of them would care to admit, they have gradually become reflections of one another, each finding herself in the very position she once condemned the other for occupying. Their circumstances have eroded the certainty with which they once judged one another. And perhaps that realization, the recognition that they have become the very thing they once despised, is the deepest loss of all.

a thought: if Daeron IS wearing a wig/dyed his hair to hide his identity and is masquerading as a squire, that could be an adorable meet-cute.

Think about it:

Daeron has to marry to form an alliance with whatever house and he travels to the Lord, still disguised in Ormund's party. And, of course, as the pact is made and the details are discussed, not a soul thinks of the bride nor the groom, both left out of the discussion and slipping out of sight separately. Daeron is off by himself in the gardens when a young woman approaches him, asking if he is part of the Hightower's party.

"Aye, my lady."

"May I ask you what he is like? Prince Daeron, I mean."

"Why do you wish to know?"

"Because I am to be his bride."

This is her. This is the stranger he'll be married to and she has no clue who she's talking to...and Daeron cannot help but smile and play the role of Ben, the squire, who knows Daeron so well, talking up the prince quite a bit and teasing a little. They spend quite a lot of time together and Daeron finds that he and his lady are well suited to one another, liking her more and more by the moment. And she likes him too. He can tell that she's sweet on him, even as she gently avoids "Ben" making little flirtation here and there (which he also likes).

The visit ends.

The Hightower's must leave to attend to some business and, when they return, she and Daeron will marry. Ben says his goodbyes and asks for a small favor, her blue ribbon for luck in the war, and assures her that she and Daeron will be quite happy together.

"How can you know that?"

"Trust me, my lady, I know the prince better than most. He shall love you."

And she watches him leave, ribbon tied around his wrist, a little part of her wishing that Ben could have been more than a friend...imagine her face when he reappears later, the red from his hair gone and white curls down his shoulders, smiling at her in such a familiar way...and then she sees the ribbon tied around his wrist and figures it out, Daeron following her out to the gardens.

"You are a beastly creature!"

"And yet you love me still."

They are happy together, the two of them. And when they name thier third born son Benjen and people ask why, they simply smile.

Is show Daemon relying on book Stannis?

I guess Daemon and Rhaenyra are so popular because people view them as the new Jon and Dany — but to me, they feel more like the Stannis and Daenerys we never got to see — especially with how much show Daemon borrows from book Stannis.

The parallels are pretty surprising:

Both craved the approval of their older brother-kings — and both wanted to be Hand.
