The pace in rural Ontario was slower than the cities. An illustration of this was the manner in which the printer media could inform its readers of significant events.
Front page of the Vancouver Daily Province, August 4, 1914.
The First World War started on August 4, 1914, and the Vancouver Daily Province newspaper declared, “Britain and Germany Now at War” on that very date. But in Goderich, a not insignificant municipality of 4,522 (1911 census), had no daily newspaper. Its local newspaper, The Signal, published every Thursday, and thus, would be several days behind major news events.
Front page of The Signal, Goderich, Ontario, August 4, 1914.
Two days had transpired since the announcement of hostilities breaking out, and there would be no doubt that the community would be a buzz with what war news it would have received. Some of the daily newspapers from London and Toronto would be available and The Signal seems to have used its column-inches to focus on the impact of the war on the town specifically.
On the front page The Signal five articles contend with war news and, as life goes on, it relates the people staying at the local Sunset Resort (also known at the Hotel Sunset) with such people of notes, such as Lady Melvin Jones[i] of Toronto who arrived in her limousine which was declared by The Signal as “…one of the finest cars seen in Goderich for some time.” It is further states that this season for the hotel may be “…the best season since the hotel has been in operation,” and further “prophesies” that this is the beginning of an increase in the number of guests in the years to come.
One wonders how the war affected this prophecy.

This newspaper gives some idea of the relative isolation from the larger world a small town in Ontario, Canada experienced. Its local paper only published once a week and there was no radio or other means of mass communication. The editor made a conscious decision to devote a very small about of print about the war on the first page of the paper. Later, on this 8-page newspaper, the editor reserved space for several articles about how the war would impact the country and one in particular titled “CANADA’S DUTY PLAIN” which reflects the deep-seated loyalty reflected by the fact that 88% of the population of Canada, as of 1911, was born in British possessions.[ii]
The war would affect Goderich, and by extension, Ontario, and Canada, in many ways and it would lead to the sacrifice of thirty of its residents[iii]. A further 521 residents from Huron County were to be part of this stark statistic.[iv]
The war has begun and many of the men of the 18th Battalion would join or be conscripted to fight for, “Canada’s duty is plain and there is no difference of opinion among Canadian leaders or the Canadian people as to the prompt, wholehearted action in its fulfilment.”[v] This “fulfilment would be costly for Canada.

The War Begins The pace in rural Ontario was slower than the cities. An illustration of this was the manner in which the printer media could inform its readers of significant events.
I’ve deleted my post containing predia’s last PV
I shared that while still watching it the other day. Later, while watching the PV I realized the theme was something quite disturbing, so I didn’t proceed to also share it in Twitter. I re-watched it several times, trying to confirm that I wasn’t being paranoid about what I was seeing, and I waited to discuss the video with a friend. She’s seen the same thing I did, but she went further. She told me:
If it had been a boy band, it would’ve been too troublesome and controversial.
I couldn’t agree more.
I know it’s just two of us seeing what we’re seeing.
But let me sum up the details that make this PV disturbing and me being against it, despite predia is one of my favorite idol groups:
The man in the video is FORCED to stay in a room he wants to escape from
He is treated like an object (actually, it is food) and he’s literally abducted into the room to become a girl gang’s toy.
At the end of the PV, he’s wearing a T-Shirt that reads the word “EATEN”, clearly stating that he’s been used by them.
“Used” is the euphemism to say RAPED.
The whole PV is about a gang rape story in which the victim is a nerdy guy whom clearly doesn’t consent. It is a common fetish in Japanese porn (as I also spoke to my friend): Dominating female gangs raping nerdy timid guys. Of course, the other way around also exists in Japanese porn. The worst thing about the PV is, that if they wanted to represent a gangband sex party, it was enough with making it so the guy actually wanted to be there. It isn’t just about the consent. I am highlighting the “it isn’t about the consent” since there’s been reported rape cases like the one in Pamplona (dubbed “La Manada”) were the victim “consented” out of fear of being beaten or even killed. So consent is not just letting yourself to be fckd. It is actually willing to be part of whatever sexual intercouse is going to happen.
In the case of this PV, it was enough by showing the guy delighted to find such a surprise party and staying (even if he’d still be timid) to enjoy the girls flashing T-shirts that represented different things to him, and at the end, have a nice smile while wearing the “EATEN” T-shirt. Instead, they showed a bunch of girls assaulting a man, showing unwanted at his room, ambushing him and abducting him, and forcing him to be eaten. That is the reason why I felt it was no good to still keep this post with the video inserted in it.
predia, as an idol group, stands for a lot of adult content that gets a very softcore treatment, more like a step under what gravure would be. But that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t sensualize and show as something that it’s ok a gang rape scene.
