How come making your own “Florida Water” isn’t appropriative? It would feel like I rolled some Oscar Meyer bologna in wonderbread and called it my own sushi- terrible example/analogy, but that’s how I’d feel like trying to recreate an closed practice. Not trying to be argumentative! Just curious and confused on navigating around closed practices. Like another example of this I see all the time is hot foot powder that people make their own version. How isn’t that appropriation?

I think you may have misunderstood one of my past posts on Florida Water, anon! I never ever said that it’s okay for people to make their own Florida Water if the Latine and Africana practices that use Florida Water happen to be closed to them. It’s not okay to try to do that because it would be appropriative. It’s also very appropriative for people to try to make hot foot powder, because that is a specific hoodoo and Africana concept.

However, not all herbal and flower-infused water with a sprinkle of alcohol is “Florida Water.” Florida Water is a specific type of recipe for a cologne that has special magical uses in many Latine and Africana traditions, but many other cultures have their own versions of herbal and flower-infused waters. The concept of taking herbs, flowers, water, and alcohol together isn’t an exclusively Latine and Africana practice. The key difference is if someone is trying to make their own thing and they aren’t deliberately copying a Florida Water recipe or trying to make their own version.

Ok, I'd like some input from my fellow witches. When using hot foot powder, I've personally experienced it working to move me and not the target. In my situation I was moved to a much better situation, and a lot of things improved for me, including the target losing the ability to negatively affect me any more. Since this experience I warn customers who buy Hot Foot from me that this is a possibility. My opinion is that this happens when A. The target is being kept in their position so they can keep working on their lesson for that area, and b. The move is more beneficial to my growth and provides the requested result . Thoughts?
