    A hacking cough really undercuts his argument, but he struggles through it, refuses to wipe at the tears beading at the corners of his eyes for fear of rubbing soot into them. This...isn’t as unusual as it should be, and he knows the sensation too well to want to deal with that on top of smoke inhalation. Damn him and his impatience; he ought to have been wearing a mask. He just thought he could get out faster than that once he took it off, to put it on the...the cat’s face.

    Okay. So he’s something of a bleeding heart.

    “You needed a statement, right? Let’s get that over with, so you don’t have to follow me into the ER. That’s not a pretty place.”

    Well. Some of the faces in there were pretty; there’s a redhead in particular on his mind at the moment --- and the disapproval that’s going to be pointed his way when he sees him.
