✦ Synopsis:

In Barsboro, only the Hound Isle Mafia is absolute, their word taken to a higher standard than the law. But in a group obsessed with power, even being born a Hound doesn’t make you royalty. Andrew knows that all too well. After years of abuse, Andrew finally decides that enough is enough, and it’s time to kill his father - he even gets offered help from his friend. But in order to bring down his father and not get killed immediately after, Andrew and Kasen are going to have to tear down the entire hierarchy of the Mafia and restructure it to their liking. This task would be daunting enough on its own, but with the government hot on their heels and a rival gang pushing back against the Hounds’ northern border, killing for Andrew’s freedom becomes nearly impossible.

Tell:

1. Have you had any Eureka moments?

Not.... really. I’ve had a couple moments where I’ve gotten an idea for a middle scene between major events, but I’ve had the core of the plot in mind before I started, and so far that trajectory hasn’t changed.

2.  On a scale of 1 to 10, how bad is what you have in store for your characters? Have they already experienced some of it? How are they feeling?

Andrew’s in store for a 10 (if 10 is the worst). It’s pretty much going to hit him all at once during the climax, though he’s definitely gotten injured already. No one else is going to hit a 10, but Kasen might get himself worked up to an 8.

3. If you could ask your characters what they were looking forward to, or what they thought of their situation, what would they say?

Andrew doesn’t really have thoughts of the future at this point. He didn’t think he’d ever get to a point in his life where he could sleep without thinking he needed to watch his back, so this is the height of his existence for now. Kasen, I think, would say that he’s looking forward to seeing how Andrew’s ability grows. He’s such a selfish character, but he really wants to know just how powerful and destructive Andrew can become. He wants to have that kind of power by on his side.

Tell:

1. “What’s your inciting incident?”

I haven’t decided yet. It’s one of two things:

1. Andrew just arrived in Barsboro, and as he’s wandering around trying to get a feel for the city (before going to the mafia boss and asking for a job) when someone attempts to mug him. Andrew kills the person.

or 2. Andrew walks into the main office of the Hounds and has to use his ability (which he’s been conditioned through fear to not use) to gain access to the boss. 

I feel like option one would set the tone for the story a bit better, and give me an opportunity to explore Andrew’s background and thought processes a bit better, but... it’s not related to the plot at all, so... not sure.

2. “What’s the norm for your main character’s life before everything goes wrong?”

uhhhhhh well, everything went “wrong” for Andrew when he was a kid. He’s never really gotten a break. But his norm before the main plot sets in has definitely been running from his father.

Kasen’s norm before Andrew shows up was just... working for the mafia. Killing people. Y’know, the usual.

3. “What’s your favorite bit of worldbuilding so far?”

I absolutely love the city that I’ve crafted for this. There’s so much history that I put into it that probably won’t even make it into the final draft, but I love it. I made a map and everything. I’ve never created a fictional city before, and I really enjoyed trying to come up with how everything fit together.

↳ World Building: Abilities

Abilities play a relatively minor role in the plot of Hound Isle, but they add for some cool twists on society and an interesting way to explore the darker side of the world. Both main characters (Andrew and Kasen), as well as a few of the side characters, have abilities, and those gain them access to a placement in the Mafia that’s largely untouchable to people without powers. 

It should be noted that while most of society considers abilities to be something to shun and get rid of, in the underbelly of the world, those with powerful abilities are treated like gods.

an excerpt under the cut:

Andrew notices that the man’s shadow is gone. He loses track of what’s being said for a moment while his gaze moves up, tracing the angle of the street light, and then back to the ground. There should be a shadow.

“Bullshit,” Andrew says, circling now because he knows what’s going on, what his partner is after. But this will take all night if Andrew doesn’t work as a distraction, because everyone in this city knows what Kasen’s power is. But Andrew’s an unknown, a piece of the equation that no one knows how to piece together.

The man’s eyes follow Andrew as he steps from the street light and into the darkness, and he watches the last of his shadow disappear just as he’s almost entirely out of the circle.

Andrew tips his head, gloved hands splaying out. “No one believes you, you know? You’ve been dirty for years. All that money stolen, all those cars purchased, and for what?” He feels like his father when he wags his finger in disappointment. “Just to die in an alley filthier than where you were born.”

“Wait –”

No one waits. A spear of pitch black shoots out from the ground, impaling the man through his thigh. A second spear comes from the opposite direction and nails into his shoulder. They vanish as quickly as they appeared, and the man drops as blood gushes.

Kasen coughs, a short raspy sound directed into his fist, and then he steps forward. “Tell us what we want to know, and I won’t kill your daughter.”
