Houndstooth Coffee, 401 Congress Ave. #100c, Austin (Downtown), TX 78701, Score: 35/50
HC is a busy local coffee shop in the First Bank Tower in downtown Austin. It has five branches in Austin and roasts its own beans.
Score: 35/50
Food: 4/5 – Pastries, breakfast tacos, grab n go sandwiches and yogurt parfaits. The Ranch House breakfast tacos are made with flour tortillas. No on-site kitchen. The pastries looked good (croissants, muffins, cake, cookies).
Coffee: 5/5 – They roast their own beans, decent foam art, pretty smooth flavor. A small cup was large (by LA standards). Choose from brewed coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, matcha, chai, tea, kombucha, hot cocoa, and chocolate milk.
Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, password posted at the register
Ambiance: 4/5 – Feels a bit like Starbucks inside lots of wood, a big counter with red tile backsplash, green paint, contemporary looking. Large windows on three sides
Noise: 4/5 – Music wasn’t too loud, lots of talking
Plugs: 3/5 – Saw three
Parking: 1/5 – Downtown so probably hard to find
Comfort: 3/5 – Hard seats all around, counter seating, some larger tables, outdoor tables
Bathroom: 3/5 – One unisex that looked pretty beat up. It’s a popular bathroom.
Art: 3/5 – None
Tips: Coffee beans and coffee brewing accessories for sale. It’s popular with campers.

Houndstooth Coffee, 401 Congress Ave. #100c, Austin (Downtown), TX 78701
Houndstooth Coffee was the first coffee shop that I tried in Austin. It was definitely busy, so that was a good sign. While there is no kitchen, they had premade Austin-style breakfast tacos from Scratch Ranch.
Houndstooth roasts its own beans. For drinks, they have brewed coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, matcha, chai, tea, kombucha, hot cocoa, and chocolate milk. For food, they have the breakfast tacos, a case of pastries (croissants, muffins, cookies, cake), yogurt parfaits, and premade sandwiches (in the cold case).
Latte, 12 oz, $5.85: This was good, simple foam art. Smooth, not bitter. On the weaker side.
Migas taco, $5.10: A flour tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, a bit of onion, and an avocado slice. Migas are supposed to have fried corn tortillas. I didn’t find any fried corn tortillas. Also, I didn’t get a salsa – do you have to ask for one?
Borracho bean & cheese taco, $5.10: flour tortilla, simmered pinto beans, cheese. Simple. Good but I didn’t get any salsa and I don’t know why.
Service was friendly but absent-minded. I ordered two tacos. She gave me one taco. I went back and said that I ordered two tacos. She gave me the wrong taco. WTF.
It’s a popular camping spot. They have free wi-fi, a restroom, and a few outlets. It feels a bit like Starbucks inside lots of wood, a big counter with red tile backsplash, green paint, contemporary looking. Coffee beans and coffee brewing accessories for sale. It’s popular with campers.

After a great breakfast at Cisco’s I needed a walk, Downtown Austin Texas was waiting for me to get lost in it. Although, actually getting lost in Downtown Austin would be pretty difficult as the place is well laid out, just like my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia.
One of the great traits of Austin is the mix of the old and the new architecture with a dose of “Austin Weird”.
East 6th Street
East 6th Street is the entertainment precinct that Austin is famous for. It is full of weird / quirky bars and music venues. An interesting place to go for a walk.
Most bars / venues had creative signs to entice customers, not sure all of them would get approved for use in Singapore.
During the day 6th Street East is fairly quiet, but at one place was pretty popular, Easy Tiger Bake Shop Beer Garden, an interesting combo.
On the opposite side of 6th Street, the canal was not as attractive.

Austin Texas City Hall
The Austin Texas City Hall is an eclectic (not sure how else to describe it) building, it even has a pointy “nose”. There is a sculpture out the front that was crafted from left-over air-conditioning duct.
Houndstooth Coffee Austin – Downtown
I was struggling to find a good coffee in the US, thankfully I found Houndstooth Coffee. They serve real coffee, not that brown water that most coffee shops in the US (and Singapore) pour. Wish I had known about them when I was in Dallas!
Austin Texas Street Art
A lot of the colour of area comes from the great street art / murals.

I wonder what this horse was saying? Or was he laughing at a joke that the drive had just told?
A vibrant guitar
An interesting take on a pub crawl, pedal while you drink.
Buford Tower or Austin Fire Drill Tower, built in 1930 for the Fire Department to perform fire drills (which explains the original name) and later renamed after Fire Department Captain James L Buford. It is now a bell tower.
And a few more pics
Lucky last is a statue of Willy Nelson and the plaque to commemorate the Austin City Limits TV Show.
After all of the walking I was thirsty and hungry! Glad it was nearly dinner time.
