Household Labor and the Routine Production of Gender - Coltrane
In the article, "Household Labor and the Routine Production of Gender" by Scott Coltrane he describes the roles that men and women play in household work and child care. Most of the families/couples interviewed seemed to equally share the duties around the house as well as taking care of the children, but some families were still somewhat gendered. The families were not as gendered as I expected them to be. I expected there to be more housewives interviewed, but instead there were wives who worked less hours than their husbands. Of course the families were still quite gendered because the wives did things like nurture the child, cleaning, and shopping. Surprisingly there were some husbands who went against the gendered stereotypes and cooked dinner for their families but only because the hours of their jobs forced them to do so because their wives may still have been at work. Basically no matter how hard you try, there are some aspects of household work that will still be gendered. People may go against gendered stereotypes because they are forced to opposed to because they choose to.
