henslo what is your opinion on a darker shade of magic i'm reading it now and i'm curious ( also sorry if you've answered this before alskdfjdskhad ) [ — @houseoflethe ]
I personally really loved the series as a whole. I read the books about 2+ years ago so while I don’t recall specific details, I really enjoyed the exquisite worldbuilding, Holland’s complex characterisation, Kell’s gentle nature and peculiar interests and the fact that there are real consequences for any actions the protagonists commit. I particularly loved the bittersweet ending of the third book.
That said:
The book’s disabled rep for Lila isn’t good (SPOILERS: she has a prosthetic eye but her actions seem to indicate that her vision is completely fine).
Lila mocks women who prefer to wear dresses and makeup.
There’s a lack of female protagonists in general.
Rhy is in a relationship with a person who’s WAY older than him.
Lila exudes “not like other girls” vibes.
The author insists that Lila is genderfluid when there’s no textual evidence to prove it (she actually retconned the rep once she’d finished publishing all three books).
