This sculptural group, together with another to which it was a pendant, belongs to the furnishings of the peristyle of the Casa dei Cervi (House of the Stags), a luxury residence named after them, owned by the decurion and duumvir Q. Granius Verus. According to Tram Thin's (1988) reconstruction, the two groups of deer attacked by dogs were arranged in two rows along a pathway through the garden, together with other objects. The iconography of the deer attacked by dogs was subject to variations, concerning the number of dogs and the point at which the attack was concentrated (see Tran Tram Tinh 1988).
