Problem:
- Why would a mother who deeply loves her children and her husband disappear for ten years? Where is she?
- This was done consentually and she cannot contact her family
Let's turn this around... For what reason would I leave someone I love for ten years?
To protect them. How could a mother protect her child in a fantasy world against violence from an unknown assailant?
Magic!
What plot point does this tie into?
- A song that was sung earlier in the season mentioned Freyja's eye (which Family A has) and Ymir's blood, both needed to cross to a plot goal later.
This means that the mom could leave in order to find Ymir's blood, which could be used to create a powerful protection spell around her daughter. However, to get a powerful magical item, you need to make sacrifices.
To get Ymir's blood, you need to pass through a sanctuary. One of the defenses could immobilize her so that she's still alive, but trapped on the island for ten years and cannot contact her family or do anything.
This allows both an active mother character in the story + a few significant plot points to be addressed both currently and in the future.
