Hi! I've read a bunch of your metas and rants, and I enjoy them immensely. I've seen you and others mention the lava fissure incident. What is the lava fissure incident? I'm refusing to read the comics, because everything I've heard about them makes them sound awful.

(Though feel free to tell me to bugger off and do the reading myself)

Oh... the lava fissure incident. I don’t understand how canon Kataang had any supporters after this. But I guess the Aang Defense Squad can’t operate if they admit that Aang isn’t a good guy. I know a lot of people think that Aang went downhill in the post-series canon, but honestly, I think his entitlement issues were established way early in the series. I’ve seen people say that the lava fissure incident was OOC for Aang, but I don’t think it is. He doesn’t do things this overtly violent towards Katara, but in the context of his kissing her twice without consent, I think there’s a larger pattern of behavior that stays very consistent across all the different continuations of Aang. 

The larger context of this is that Katara’s trying to get Aang to practice fire bending, but Aang wants to discuss their “relationship”. Katara is being evasive on that and insists on him practicing. So Aang does this...

Then instead of treating this as the violently crimson flag that it absolutely is, the next panel is Aang being a sad boi because Katara doesn’t immediately want to talk about his feelings for her. And we as the audience are supposed to feel bad for him. As far as I know, he never apologizes for this. He continues with his violent outburst (but since it’s not towards Katara, I guess we’re supposed to give him a pass or whatever).

So today I was walking home from the supermarket with my five-year old brother. We were in a parking lot and I heard a man’s voice say, “Hey, can I have your number if you’re single?” Oh, I thought. Some weirdo is trying to pick up a girl. I wonder what she’s going to say. So I turn around to see and there’s this guy in a minivan driving by about 10 ft away looking at me expectantly and all I can do is stare. Blankly. I look at him with the most bewildered face until he says, "I guess not…" And then he drives away so quickly he doesn’t notice the pothole, but it doesn’t stop him. Yeah, I guess not, buddy.
