Howard 101 to Present Bowie 25 Tribute
Twenty-five David Bowie covers - from early tracks like “Space Oddity” (Billy Corgan) to latter-day cuts like “I’m Afraid of Americans” (Bones) - will make up “The Howard Stern Tribute to David Bowie.”
It airs at 10 p.m. Eastern Feb. 9 on Sirius XM’s Howard 101 channel.
”I’m glad we can share these fantastic interpretations of his songs,” the show’s host and Bowie producer Tony Visconti said in a statement. “There is no end to how they can be interpreted.”
Other featured artists include Peter Frampton (“Rebel Rebel”), Todd Rundgren (“Life on Mars?”), Shawn Colvin (“”Heroes””) and Daryl Hall, whose cover of “Fame” is excerpted in the audio snippet above.
”’Fame’ has always been one of my favorite David Bowie songs,” Hall said on Howardstern.com, where a full tracklist is available.
”It’s certainly his funkiest. And, I sure do agree with the lyrics.”
Other featured remakes recorded specifically for the program include “Let’s Dance” by Umphrey’s McGee with Huey Lewis and Jeff Coffin; “All the Young Dudes” by Lisa Loeb; “Starman” by Garbage; and “Moonage Daydream” by Kristeen Young and co-produced by Visconti.
There’s no word on whether the songs will be released in any format after the broadcast, but Stern told Rolling Stone he wants to use his platform to preserve Bowie’s legacy.
“When I got into rock ‘n’ roll music, one of the artists that I first really got into was David Bowie,” Stern said. “He was always evolving, he was always on top of things, he was just a great musician and a great songwriter and a great singer.
”I want to make sure that people remember David Bowie.”
Bowie died at 69 in January 2016.
