In recognition of the importance of Education for Black and Brown people, our responsibility to reach back as we climb, and the spirit of servant leadership my mother and I established the Bishop John H. D. Heyward Memorial Scholarship in honor of my late grandfather. This scholarship aims to promote academic excellence and intellectual curiosity amongst all learners. This summer I was privileged to teach a group of amazing scholars at the Community Builders Glassmanor Elementary Freedom School. For 6 weeks we read books, discussed socially relevant topics, engaged in social action, and empowered ourselves and our communities. These two scholars, Kaiyah and Marcus, stood out for their insightful thoughts, servant leader attitudes, and overall positivity.
