In recognition of the importance of Education for Black and Brown people, our responsibility to reach back as we climb, and the spirit of servant leadership my mother and I established the Bishop John H. D. Heyward Memorial Scholarship in honor of my late grandfather. This scholarship aims to promote academic excellence and intellectual curiosity amongst all learners. This summer I was privileged to teach a group of amazing scholars at the Community Builders Glassmanor Elementary Freedom School. For 6 weeks we read books, discussed socially relevant topics, engaged in social action, and empowered ourselves and our communities. These two scholars, Kaiyah and Marcus, stood out for their insightful thoughts, servant leader attitudes, and overall positivity. "29 Black People You Should Know (But Never Heard Of) Day 18: Mrs. Marian Wright Edelman (1939- ) is the President & Founder of the Children’s Defense Fund (@childdefender1973). While attending Spelman College, she was awarded Merrill scholarship and studied in the Soviet Union. She went on to get her law degree from Yale Law School. She was the first Black woman to be admitted to the Mississippi Bar. She practiced law for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She help establish a Head Start program. She founded the Washington Research Project, a public interest law firm and also became interested in issues related to childhood development and children. In 1973, she founded the Children’s Defense Fund as a voice for poor children, children of color,and children with disabilities. CDF is the largest child advocacy organization in the country.
