On Cosplay, Fast Fashion, & Waste

Fast fashion and disposable outfits in cosplay community spaces give me anxiety. Seeing people openly talk about throwing their "trashed" cosplay away after a single con makes me sad. Some costumes are crafted with such low durability that they fall apart beyond repair if you look at them the wrong way. I've met a ton of other cosplayers whose idea of "cosplay repair" ends with a stapler and some hot glue.

I never ever ever ever want to shame people for not knowing something. Crafting is hard. Making a low-quality costume isn't a sin or a crime. If you're new and still learning and don't really know what you're doing yet, that's fine! No harm, no foul, no bruise.

The cosplayers who do make me grouchy, however, are the ones who are unwilling to try. The ones who are flippant about throwing away a cosplay without trying to mend it, repurpose it, reuse it, or pass it along. The ones who intentionally make a costume just durable enough to last a single day, then toss it in the trash with zero thought.

My sewing and costuming experience started when I joined the ren faire, and I had to make my costumes sturdy enough to survive multiple weeks of heavy use, with the durability and freedom of movement to allow sword fighting on the living chessboard. I was taught how to shop for inexpensive fabrics and materials, but use high-quality, long-lasting techniques so that my costumes didn't disintegrate after a single day of performing. I have made extremely durable, cost-effective costumes out of bedsheets and thrift store fabric, as have many of my friends.

That experience has carried over into my cosplay. I am not happy with a costume unless it can go through three consecutive days of stage combat and high-intensity walking around outside in the heat, go through the washer and dryer, and come out completely unscathed.

Again, I never want to needlessly shit on other people's cosplay. Cosplay gatekeeping sucks and is no fun for anyone. At the same time, fast fashion is just as rampant in cosplay as it is everywhere else, and it sucks to see how wasteful it is.

You can make things durable even with cheap materials. Stop making flimsy costumes that you're just going to toss. Stop making piles and piles of waste. Please stop buying fabric just to slap a costume together with glue and throw it in the trash. If you are going to invest time and money into making something by hand, make it durable and comfy and worth the effort.

Even if you only want to personally wear it once, you can sell it, give it away, trade it, do something other than toss it in the trash. Show some love to your costumes, show some love to the planet, pick one action you can take to make your cosplay a little less wasteful. Being obsessed with the myth of a "personal carbon footprint" isn't helpful, but we as cosplayers should try to at least make things that'll last longer than 24 hours.

I understand that sewing can be incredibly intimidating, but basic stitching really isn't that complicated if you have a guide and the right tools. I personally need assistive devices for sewing thanks to my hand tremors and tendonitis, but those tools do exist, and can make things easier for both disabled and newbie sewists. I use rotary cutters instead of scissors, I keep a supply of needle threaders on hand, I have multiple little gadgets that help me sew in a straight line so my shaking hands don't screw everything up. There are tons of tools available, tons of tutorials online, and if you're interested in learning, there's a whole world out there to explore.

If you don't want to do all the crafting yourself, that's totally fine, but if you are going to hand-make your costume, you should try and make it durable. It's better for the planet and it's way less stressful to go to an event when you know your costume won't fall apart on the con floor.

Episode 8–5: Reviewing the Rules!

Cater: “Spelldrive is a 7-on-7 sport, and everything from the movement of the disk, attack, and defense are all based on magic.”

Cater: “If you touch the disk or drop it to the ground, you will get a penalty.”

Cater: “It depends on the formation, but half the players are on brooms.”

Cater: “If you put the disk in the opponent’s goal, you will get points. The big circle nets you one point, and the small one three points.”

Floyd: “Don’t you get extra points if you score from a distance like in basketball?”

Sebek: “No. However, long shots are also effective in letting opponents, and spectators know of a player's advanced magical skills.”

Sebek: “Ah, I still fall in love with it even when I remember it. The young master showed us consecutive shots of his own!”

Idia: “He did it at the I-Inter-dorm Spelldrive tournament. Consecutive cheat shots that shatter the enemy's heart into pieces...”

Cater: “Ha ha… That disk is made of material that absorbs magic power, so you have to keep pumping magic into it otherwise, it will stall.”

Cater: “…‘Ordinarily’.”

Cater: “Hitting multiple long shots in a row may be a technique that only Malleus can use.”

Sebek: “That’s right! Essentially…”

Sebek: “If the disc leaves your hand, it will be difficult to control it with magic, and you will be more likely to be cut by the enemy.”

Idia: “On the other hand, if you hold the disc for too long, enemies will swarm you and you will be completely overwhelmed.”

Idia: “It's tiring to keep applying magic to the disk, so it's better to just pass it, and shift the responsibility onto someone else.”

Floyd: “That reminds me, you can legally hit an opponent in Spelldrive. I wonder who I should squeeze…aha.”

Sebek: “THAT DOESN’T MEAN IT’S LEGAL!!!”

Floyd: “Eh~? But everyone was doing it during the Spelldrive tournament.”

Cater: “Well, that’s one thing…”

Cater: “It’s prohibited to deliberately aim at players, and attack them with magic, but…”

Cater: “Due to the characteristics of stealing the opponent's disk with magic and using obstruction magic on the attacking side...”

Cater: “There are times when you accidentally hit your opponent with magic...?”

Idia: “It's also known as ‘Field Martial Arts'’...I have the impression that Spelldrive players are always injured somehow.”

Floyd: “Hmm...I see. In other words, you can’t be caught by the referee…”

Sebek: “HEY, DON’T BRING UNFAIR IDEAS INTO SPORTS!!”

Floyd: “Noisy… When the match starts, should I sink Crocodile first?”

Cater: “Now, now, fighting each other is prohibited!”

*Whistle blows*

Vargas: “Buck team! You won't grow your muscles if you keep fluttering! Get into position quickly!”

Cater: “Oops...we should get started. You can change positions midway through, but let's try it roughly first.”

Floyd: “I'm not in the mood to fly today, so I'll take the position that isn’t riding a broomstick.”

Cater: “Well then, please give me the bucks who will stand in the middle of the field, and compete for the disc.”

Floyd: “Eh...don't the bucks play defense?”

Cater: “In Spelldrive, I think it's a good idea to break the spirit of an enemy who gets carried away and attacks.”

Floyd: “I like getting in the way when other people are getting upset, though.”

Cater: “You can see the frustrated look on the opponent's face, and your explosive power and stamina speak volumes. It's perfect for Floyd.”

Floyd: “Hmm, then there you go. All I have to do is shoot down the flying small fry, and disks with magic. Easy victory~”

Idia: “As soon as the match starts, I feel like we’re going to lose due to a foul...I'm actually grateful.”

Cater: “Well, I'd like Idia-kun to play the command role in the standoff position.”

Idia: “HAAH?! ISN’T THAT AN IMPORTANT POSITION——?!”

Cater: “You’re the only headmage here. If you don't like that, why don't you go to the vanguard and run around?”

Idia: “Uugh~~…I hate both so much…”

Idia: “Wouldn't it be better to have a command tower in the rearguard where you can get a great view from a height instead of running around on your feet? No, but...”

Sebek: “HEY, DECIDE QUICKLY! THE MATCH IS ABOUT TO START!!”

Idia: “I-I-I got it. I'm fine with the command position...”

Idia: *Walking away* “Geez, it’s really hard to go to class in person.”

Cater: “I think Sebek is a good forward. It's a good position to stand in front of the goal and aim for points.”

Sebek: “That’s fine, leave it to me!”

Cater: “Well, Caycay is a hooker! I’m a positive person who attacks while riding a broomstick, but today I’ll also act as a relay between the vanguard and rearguard.”

Scarabia student A: “Then, we’ll divide ourselves into a rearguard and a vanguard.”

Vargas: “Are you ready? Believe in your muscles and magic, and fight to the limit! Stag vs. Bear Team!”

Hello. It's Monsta X representative.

Some relevant changes are made in <Monsta X Fancafe Usage Notice> starting from January 3, 2020 and we want to inform you about it.

Please check the following and make sure to follow the announcement, as it takes effect on January 3, 2020.

1. Information cannot be shared outside of the Official Fancafe

Excluding data from Announcements (통합공지) and Official DATA, materials from Monsta X Official Fancafe cannot be moved or reuploaded outside. (Secondary processing is also prohibited)

Not only Monsta X related materials, but also content posted on the Fancafe by Monsta X members (including letters) are not allowed to be moved out.

Please follow this rule.

As the access to the boards is a benefit for registering and leveling up, it is prohibited to share the content outside, we hope you use it only within the Fancafe.

If a member shares the content outside, they will be demoted regardless their rank.

2. Boards access

3. Nickname and privacy rules

Rules regarding nicknames are the most basic things to keep in mind when using the Fancafe. If the nickname is not allowed, a member will be downgraded to the Associate Member no matter their rank. Please check your nickname and ensure it meets requirements.

Mixing Hangul, English letters and numbers is allowed (not more than 8 Korean characters, 12 English characters, 8 Japanese or Chinese characters/exceeding the length limit by combining names with numbers is not allowed)

Special characters, spacing, single Korean consonants or vowels are not allowed

Nicknames consisting of only members' names are not allowed

Nicknames with other celebrities' names are not allowed

Nicknames like names of Monsta X members, the agency's employees, families are not allowed

Nicknames with foul language, sexual or other inappropriate meaning are not allowed

E-mails and group messages need to be ticked in "Receive settings"

ID and personal information (gender/age - Daum authentication) need to be visible for Manager

(Putting everything on private or public is not allowed)

4. Correct titles and language

Please use proper language on the Fancafe, while addressing Monsta X members, use correct titles according to your age and gender. (nim/님, ssi/씨, kun/군, oppa/오빠, hyung/형, etc.)

Please use formal speech instead of informal.

5. Marking comments under board posts as "Secret" is not allowed

By default, no comments under boards are confidential; if any is found, it will be deleted. (Some boards, that require commenting personal information, are excluded from the rule)

6. Financial transactions are not allowed

Do not make any financial transactions, such as ticket transfers or goods re-selling. If any is detected, both concerned members will be removed.

7. Sharing personal information is not allowed (including personal photos)

Sharing any personal info of a member, including uploading their photo, is strictly prohibited. (However, if it is absolutely needed, you can put it on the Event sharing (이벵공유) or Looking for friends ( 친구구함) boards; we are not responsible for any issues which may be effect of sharing personal information.)

8. No speculative, unconfirmed or personal-life comments is allowed

Speculative comments, private (sasaeng) comments, vulgarisms, members' impersonations, talking about other artists or fandoms, promoting other sites are not allowed. If detected, the concerned member will be downgraded or removed.

3. Other

1) 3 letters per person per day (prevent spamming)

- Posting the same content after changing only the category is not allowed (copy+paste)

- If there are more than 3 posts, any "overwritten" letter will be returned without notice

- Consecutive letters are not allowed

2) Reposting photos, posts or comments from Super members' (paid membership) boards is not allowed

(For example) MX Talk Tok

- Cropping a photo, decorating it with stickers or writing are not allowed

3) If a member commented on the letter, it still may be returned without notice

4) When writing a letter, we recommend using honorifics according to the member's age

4. Warning system

1) If it is found that a letter does not meet the requirements, the message is moved to the return board

- 1 return equals 1 warning

(for example) 10 posts were written in a day, 5 get returned → 5 warnings → degradation

2) If 5 or more warnings are issued, the member's rank goes one level below

- After degradation, follow the guidance in the notice

3) After the period of degradation, the member asks directly the staff responsible for the board to re-enter the rank

- 1st degradation: re-entering on request after 7 days

- 2nd degradation: re-entering on request after 14 days

- 3rd degradation: re-entering on request after 30 days

- 4th degradation: re-entering on request after 90 days

4) Applying for a level-up during the degradation period (including applications for MONBEBE 4th) is not allowed

 * If a post is deleted after being returned, it is difficult to determine reasons for the return and re-entering, so please do not do it.

5. Immediate degradation

1) In case of violating nickname regulations, the letter will be returned and the member - downgraded without notice

- After being downgraded because of nickname rules, the member can be promoted to Regular member through regular application board and promoted to Super member (paid membership) through [Apply for MONBEBE4TH] board

2) Negative comments on a member or the group, such as slander or mockery, results in immediate return and degradation

- Ban on activities depending on the degree

3) If a post gets reported by at least 3 various members, the person who posted gets downgraded immediately and the post is returned

※ Title and contents' are checked based on the PC.

* This is a fan letter board, which can be accessed by Monsta X members and other Fancafe members. Because of that, any misleading or divisive post may be returned or result in downgrading, depending on the degree of the wrongdoing.

"Hamon!" Came a yell beyond the gates. Mutual sighs shared around.

"The boy has returned...again, can't you at least give him an audience Hamon?" Chuchuto pleaded from her perch on the railing.

"No. And why should I?" Hamon huffed. "The boy shows less resolve than an unarmed Tonberry."

Shared grumbles about the disturbance showered on Hamon.

"Fine, fine you lot can't do it yourselves, better to have the Master do it anyway" Joints protested upon his rising, striding to the gates he flung them open to... an empty passage?

"Well I suppose he heard the Holyfist 'imself was going to greet 'im this time." Hamon chuckled to himself returning to the guild.

"Hiya!" Came from the rafters above Hamon, as Bace took the opportunity to strike.

"Do you see me now Hamon?" Bace threw at him between blows, defying his looks Hamon deftly dodged each fist as they flew.

"Have you grown a spine little one? Keep practicing and one day I may allow you to shine me boots!"

"No can do old man if I am to ever leave pearl lane." The words stopped Hamon mid block causing a clip to his hip sending him to his rear. Bace moved in to finish the fight hoping to finally be recognized by his hero.

"Enough!" Chuchuto came to Hamon's aid, palm thrusting Bace into an awaiting gladiator's arms

"Shh boy settle down now no harm will come to you but you must be still." Bace stopped struggling as much, and covered his head.

"Please don't kick me, I'll stop and won't be in anyone's way I..I promise!" Franz's face drained of color as the boy's voice cracked through the statement.

"I will do NO such thing young miqot'e, now nor in the future! So, please stop." As Franz sighed the last statement Bace stopped his residual resistance to look at the Holyfist himself.

"H-Hamon? Will he be ok?"

"Aye. I am just shocked is all," Hamon muttered upon rising with the help of Chuchuto. "you are from pearl lane you said?"

"Um yes sir...I mean not originally but now yes."

"Where is your parents?" Inquired Hamon while dusting himself off.

"I..i mean they left me here, my mom is feral." Whispers from the guild began to build but a sharp look from Chuchuto silenced all.

"Franz please bring him in, Chuchuto please fetch the night milk there is much to discuss."

"Duneswright." Bace muttered "I like it Chuchuto thank you."

"Of course, they say it was the Lalafell that united the clans' given name, I find it suits you."

"Would you like a ride back to the guild? Hamon is probably waiting for these skins." Bace said lifting their cargo.

"Please it's is rather hard keeping up with you now-a-days." Chuchuto sighed reaching up to Bace.

"Heh would you say I outgrew your expectations of me?" Bace asked arching his brow.

"Oh goodness I never thought you would be as small as me but at least you aren't as large as average miqot'e." Chuchuto added upon settling on Bace's shoulders. The return to Ul'dah was uneventful allowing distaste for the plain landscape to burrow deeper in the back of Bace's mind.

"Hamon we're home!" Came Chuchuto's small voice

"Good 'urry in 'ere now we 'ave a guest!" Hamon resounded from the back

Bace's tail bristled at the thought of another guest the last one ended quite poorly. Quite the Ofish fellow had attempted to pet Bace without permission and ended with a visit to a healer, though Hamon had howled with laughter Chuchuto was not thrilled with the treatment.

"Ah this is the lad now" Hamon motioned to Bace

"Please allow me but a moment to ease this load." Bowing politely Bace stepped away.

Now muffled voices carried well to the young seeker's ears.

"Well he has grown well that is visible and you assure me of his strength, but how fairs his mind?"

"He is sharper than most, not one for a fight." Hamon laughed "Heh well unless it's me or the wilds that is."  

"Hmm...well I am looking for guard during travel. Are you sure that can be filled?"

"Have no doubt if troubles arise you will wish for no other."

Bace made plenty of noise on the return hoping to end the conversation, to no avail.

"Perfect. Boy I require a demonstration of your skill" The guest motioned to the sparing square. "Please find a suitable opponent."

"Um ok, Hamon are you.." Bace began

"No! It shall not be Hamon, take Chuchuto." Chuchuto rose from her seat by the hearth.

"I...I understand." Bace bowed again, Chuchuto would not be pleased if he upset another guest. Turning to stretch and find his focus Bace noted how small she appeared when taking stance. A shout came from behind, She rushed him unprepared catching him in a daze. Barely able to deflect her flurry of blows the world was a muffled dissonance. Scared, Bace threw consecutive punches flawlessly strung together through fear, creating a deadly dance that Chuchuto could not keep up with. Landing multiple blows in quick succession sound returned to deaf ears pleading him to stop. Out of breath he ran to Chuchuto though stopped short by other guild members encompassing her

"Step no further fiend you will harm her no more!" Fear showed in the pugilists eyes causing Bace to step back.

"I...i didn't mean too." Tears began to well in his eyes. "H..hamon please." Not looking at Bace, Hamon picked up Chuchuto carefully.

"She will be fine, please return to the back with Erin while 'er wounds are tended." Hamon strode out of the hall with most in tow.

Tears rolled down his face mixing with his sweat. He had no desire to go anywhere with that man let alone be in the abandoned guild hall with him. He began to run towards the entrance when a cough made him freeze.

"I believe you are to stay here with me boy." Erin said waving towards the back. Not wanting to cause anymore trouble Bace followed solemnly behind, taking the seat Hamon vacated Bace looked down ashamed.

"Stop the sulking, in fact you should be proud you are able to achieve grease lightning." Bace bristled at his words.

"A child sulks. I am concerned for my friend, do not insult me or my intelligence!" Bace spat at him with words dripped of spite.

"Well be that as it may you have demonstrated you are capable of being my escort so we shall be departing tonight." Erin rose dusting himself off. "I recommend you commence packing." Leaving Bace alone to release a breath he didn't know he was holding. He couldn't leave he would miss everyone. His mind flashed the unwelcoming faces of everyone surrounding Chuchuto.

"I will leave and I will come back to them with a head held high." Bace began to pack.

   Night seemed to fall quickly with nothing but small murmurs rising from the guild itself only a handful of pugilists had returned leaving Bace alone curled on his empty cot awaiting Erin's return.

"Come." Was all Erin chose to say to him, upon departure Erin threw a small sack of gil onto Hamon's cot. "That should be enough."  Bace watched as the seam broke feeling as if his heart might do just the same. Leaving the din of the city was bittersweet, it was as if he could breath a little less hindered now.

"Where are we traveling?" Bace wondered aloud adjusting on his chocobo.

"Ah! It finds it's voice again" Erin exclaimed.

"I have a name!" Bace snapped at Erin. “please do well to remember that."  

"Tsk...tsk however are we to get along at this rate." Erin sighed "Well if you must know Bace we are headed to Ala Mhigo'."

"Where the monks are?!"

"One in the same, not everyday you get to see such a sight eh?" Erin smirked knowing the boy was hooked and wouldn't leave now.
