Let’s Dig A Bit Into Gentrification
You see it everyday; you’ve watched it happening for years now. Yet you quite don’t understand or know why or what has brought about such change. You start to say things like “this area is so different compared to a few years ago” or “I would not mind hanging out there now.”Â
Ideally, these are things we want to say no matter where we go in this world; we actually can. But society tells us we can’t and only exposes the hideous. They tell us we must change a community to make it welcoming for all. Realistically, they only want to invite one familiar look to invade and eradicate all cultures & communities until their is only ONE.
Reality is; we don't take the time to study one and another's communities and cultures. We allow images displayed by influenced media sources to educate us -- without taking to time to inform ourselves on others. Making us assume all people and things in certain communities are destructive, dangerous & needs eradication. Shielding us from experiencing the beauty that happens behind the news reports; the arts show/festivals, community events, family barbecues, etc.Â
Open your eyes; impoverished communities, no matter how much negativity may happen due to systemic oppression -- are more unified & connected than rich, privileged, upper class communities will EVER BE!
By destroying these communities it eliminates diversity & breaks the unified chains; creating a society of disconnected yet familiar looking people & faces.Â
We've saw this several time over in the past. Exp; Hitler's invasion on Jewish lands. Or, how the Spaniards refused to learn the Native culture & ways -- once landed in the Americas. Instead, imposed their will & way by slaughtering & wiping out MILLIONS of lives. Stealing land from the poor for their own gain to simple & cheap benefits.Â
History repeats itself over & over & OVER again. It is repeating itself right now as you read this. It just calls itself something different each time as it achieve the same goals & effects through different & modernized actions.Â
Look at places around the USA like NYC, DC, Sacramento, Chicago, etc. Brooklyn, NY being one of the most intense versions of this modernized invasion. Also places around the world like Dubai, Cairo, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, etc. All of these places have been reshaped in the past several years to become more appealing to the privileged; forcing and pushing the underprivileged out and into -- nowhere.Â
Let's look at New York City; one of the most diverse cities in the world has quickly lost it's diversity. New York City was giving an image of opportunity, growth & higher living. It is the land were anybody from anywhere can make it in life. Well at least it "was".
Places like Bedstuy, Bushwick (now known as East Williamsburg to appeal to the privileged), Williamsburg, Harlem, The Bronx, Crown Heights, etc. were all some of the most beautifully diverse communities in the country. Go to such places now & only hints of the culture from past communities haunts the cracks of the concrete & brick.Â
As all this change happens, nobody stops to think or wonder "what happened to that nice family of 5 that lived next door?" or "what happened to the kids that played basketball in this park every weekend?" But what really did happened to those nice families of 3+ & those children that ran the park wild every afternoon & weekend?...Â
{This is what we've decided to call it this time...}Â
Gentrification is what happened to those families and those community children. Gentrification is what’s happening to the whispers of culture in those communities. Society forced them out & into a situation where they had no other choice but to relocate.Â
More times often then less, that relocation brings discomfort & unnecessary stress. Most of the time these families are focused into the shelter system; trapped in an endless spiral of stress and lost opportunities. Or they end up crowding into a family member or friends one bedroom apartment causing tension & fraction due to lack of space & privacy. Or worst, they end up on the streets as their begs & pleads for help continues to be ignored due to a major lack in empathy.Â
Meetings are hosted about community development & improvement for all people. But while these meetings are being hosted; they have heavily forgotten & lack the "all" aspect of change. How can they host a meeting on community development & improvement without any of the community members involved? Shouldn't the people who are & will be most impacted by these changes be in attendance?Â
Of course not, why should they invite you to meetings about your community when the developments are not being made for you & your people? Why should they invite you to a meeting about how to get you out & get more of their people in? To them; you are known & classified as "the unwanted". So what would make you think your "wanted" at their meetings?Â
Picture this; you've grown up in a community your entire life. You've watched couples age & pass that you've known since you were a child. As their kids grow to take over the house. You've watched those same kids grow up with you & become strong adults. But your community is not as well off as others, but yet it still works, everybody you know knows, grown & works together -- you are proud of your home.Â
Then one day; I come up to you and say "I have so many plans to help improve this community. You & your people are going to love what we do to this area." Not once asked you what do you feel is needed to help improve your community & uplift your people.Â
“Would you feel like I am really there to improve the area for you & your people? Or would you assume I am only there to improve the community for attraction purposes?”
All of a sudden; stores that you know you yourself nor your neighbors cannot afford start opening all around you. Malls, metro routes, bars, salons, retail, etc. the area starts shifting quickly. Next thing you know, those now adults you grew up with are forced to sell a home they grew up in and parents left to them. You yourself have been in a battle to keep your own home. Before you know it, you are forced to sell and move into a much smaller apartment where you'll potentially have a roommate just to make rent.Â
This is the ugly unspoken truth that our media outlets keeps masked up. Gentrification may make a community look more appealing & safer. But is it really worth the hundreds of thousands of families that being forced into the streets -- for the privileged ones leisure & comfort?Â
Generally speaking; this mostly & way too often acquires in the Black & Spanish communities around America. But it can & WILL happen to any & all underprivileged community around the world. Whether black, brown or white; if the privileged wants in, expect to find yourselves out...
Thank you for reading The Ugly Unspoken Truth's blog. Not many people can handle it but we need to start telling & seeing this for HOW IT REALLY IS!!! So please, if you agree, post, share & lets make these issue come to the front of conversations!Â
