Berry had to wait all day before she could audition. She had to stay after to sort through the auditioner's papers so she could sort them into the extras pile and the possible leads one. The video camera was taping each audition, and after the first ten, she was starting to feel intimidated.

When she finally took that stage, her hands were shaking, but her voice was firm as she spoke into the microphone. "Hello, I'm Berry Rico, and I'll be auditioning primarily for the part of Elphaba and secondarily for the part of Galinda. My song of choice is Songbird, because I feel like this both describes Elphaba's feelings towards the people she loves, despite what anyone else says."

Her big soulful voice took up the entire space. She translated her hopes of being seen as more than just the crazy girl into Elphaba's similar aspirations. Her voice soared with the hope that someone could see her, could love her, for what she could offer. And her voice rang with a love for the person that did see and love her for who she was instead of what.

It's alright, I know it's right. 

People called both Perrie and Elphaba names. They underestimated them, cast them aside, because they were different. The pain of knowing that ran a smooth undertone to all the other emotions Elphaba had to be feeling everyday. The rejection. The humiliation. And then the hope that came when you were with those people that genuinely loved you.

After a brief instrumental, she decided to wrap up her shortened version of the song, her eyes watering both from acting and genuine emotion.

And the songbirds are singing,

Like they know the score,

Like never before.

When she finished, two tears fell down her face that she wiped off quickly, before saying "thank you" into the microphone and leaving the stage. She'd just bared her soul to whoever would be judging, all she could hope was that it was enough to get the role of her dreams.
