The halls were quiet, nearly painfully so. But, that was the way that it was supposed to be. After midnight, no student should be out of bed, wandering around the deserted corridors. On a night like this, there wasn’t much work to be done. Still, there wouldn’t be much sleep to be had, Ben rarely had a good nights sleep at the school. Potions were out of the question, they were an aid and ultimately would equate into him being unable to sleep on his own even when traveling. That was simply unacceptable. Especially when it came to some of the more dangerous creatures that were encounter. Dragons required fast reflexes that lacked sorely when one ran on little to no sleep.
Patrols like these were able to full in the voids of time where there would have normally been nothing to keep his full focus trained on. No, if it weren’t for the necessary walks, he would be pacing a hole in the floor of the quarters that had become a home away from, well home. As much as the man was used to traveling, craved the constant motion, he always appreciated coming home and having that steady place that would always welcome him.
With all of that in mind, the sweep continued. All seemed settled on the upper floors and the prefects had been on their own watch around the dorms of the students. It was time to finish up and that meant just checking the dungeons. Maybe a couple hours of z’s could actually be caught after all. Taking the stairs in a two by two formation, the distance between where he had been and where he needed to be where easily and quickly covered. All seemed calm enough. That was until he came upon what should have been an abandoned classroom. The door remained ajar, light filtering through the crack and throwing itself down the hall.
Approaching cautiously, his wand slid into his hand from the spot he had it on his arm. Voices became apparent as he inched closer. They sounded young, and were quite hushed. Whoever it was didn't wish to be overheard.
"We must be ready for when they make a play on Hogwarts. Forces are gathering and they will need all the help that they can get. Not like last time..."
"What if anyone finds out?"
"We don't let them. No one must know that any of us have affiliation with the Death Eaters. We keep things quiet and make it seem as if we are disgusted by what they are doing. The issue before was that they all wore their allegiances on their sleeves." Seemed that he had stumbled upon a group of students who were wandering in the wrong direction. He was going to have to step in here.
"I think the problem before was that they were too conspicuous about things as well. Mind telling me what you are all doing out of bed?" Ben stepped inside the room only to be greeted with more students than he expected. There were sixteen older students, wands all in hand and looking none too thrilled about the interruption. Several sneered openly while others tried to play innocent.
"I don't think we know anything that you are talking about Professor. Yes you caught us out of bed but we were simply doing work." The oldest male pointed towards the tables were parchments were stacked. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught the movement of a wand being raised. A shield was thrown up in time to block the spell. Of course this was going to turn into chaos with students attacking him. And the numbers game was not in his favor.
