I’m thinking about the Skip time jump. Kip and Scott start secretly dating fall of 2013. Kip walks away from Scott in early 2014. But then, June 2017, Scott wins the Stanley Cup. And Kip, his dad George, and Kip’s best friend Elena are in Scott’s complimentary seats to watch the win.
So what happened in that little over 3 year period in between the breakup and Scott initiating hockey stonewall in June 2017?Clearly Kip decided he could live with Scott being closeted and be in a relationship with him anyway. I wonder if Scott maybe unclenched on being 100% closeted. Agreed to be introduced to Kip’s father and closest friends as his secret boyfriend.
Had George Grady over for dinner at his apartment, instead of going to a restaurant for a conventional Meet the Parents scenario. Rather than Scott hanging out with Kip and his friends at a gay bar (where Scott could end up on TMZ), invited Kip’s closest friends to socialize in his apartment.
Because a lot of Kip’s problems in 1.03 don’t seem to be about Scott being closeted to the entire world. His problems are with having to actively lie to his loved ones to maintain total secrecy. With George at the arena in 2017, seems like Scott compromised on total secrecy once they got back together.
It’s implied that Kip was in grad school in Boston between 2104 and 2016. But presumably he would come back to visit his family and friends in New York every so often. And maybe he and Scott eventually got a situationship going.
They would hook up when Kip was in NYC, and then say they wouldn’t do it again. But of course it would happen again. They might also hook up when Scott was in Boston for games. And eventually it turned back into a relationship.
Them living in different cities for two years might have actually helped. It’s a lot easier to have a secret relationship with someone closeted when you live in Boston and he lives in NYC. Because of the long distance, you can’t live together, you can’t spend tons of time together, and can’t routinely socialize as a couple.
And then Kip would’ve gotten his MA in spring/summer 2016. Let’s say he got a job at a museum or gallery in New York, moved back, and promised himself he wouldn’t get involved with Scott again. But ended up breaking that promise very fast. And they compromised. Scott would stay closeted to the world, but to a small, trusted circle, he was Kip’s boyfriend.
That’s my headcanon, anyway.
SHANE HOLLANDER in every episode of Heated Rivalry - 1.03 Hunter
“fuck you, go home!” i just resorted to what i see hockey players say, like, “fuck you, pussy!” very not pc or polite or canadian. “go home. you're 45 years old. yeah, you're ancient. you're a dinosaur. ice your knees. go throw some voltaren on your back, you old man. get the cane.”
