Ilya's hand on Shane's knee 🥹

two details i can’t stop thinking about from heated rivalry episode 6:

when theyre playing football and they kick the ball into the white lamp on the grass, Shane immediately fixes it and ilya pauses for a minute to let him. It was such a small thing but such a good representation that his need for control and organisation isn’t always a big deal, sometimes it’s just automatically going to fix a lamp instead of leaving it slightly out of place.

and also when they’re watching the sunset on the rock under a blanket, ilya is smoking. I think it’s such an important thing for media to show; love doesn’t stop addiction. Ilya won’t just stop all his self destructive behaviours as soon as he realises he loves Shane. And he’s still the same ilya, even if he’s more comfortable now around Shane, and he is still gonna smoke and drink and do all the things he shouldn’t, because that’s who he is. And being loved by Shane won’t immediately stop that. But what will help him become his happiest, healthiest self is Shane accepting and loving him. I might be deeping this too much but I hate when shows do things that make the characters end up being fully happy and healed and everything is perfect, but this shows us that things can be perfect with imperfections. Ilya can be happy and in love and still want to smoke sometimes.

love the look that ilya gives to shane's parents in episode six when shane begins having a panic attack and ilya just looks at them like he expects them to know what to do in this situation only to learn that their technique is just to let it pass

love the way that he has to ignore it, and instead just start comforting shane and bringing him out of a panic attack, which is super vulnerable for him as well as it is for shane, because now he's opening up around people he doesn't know, even if those people are shane's parents. he comforts shane by reminding him of the intimacy and vulnerability and care that they both have for each other and he means it and he doesn't know how yuna and david are going to react to seeing him say these things to his son, he doesn't know whether they'll use these things against him

love the way that he must have been so scared of what shane's parents would think of him, whether or not they'd accept him and i love the way all those worries fall to the wayside the moment shane's lost in his head because then, the only thing that matters is that shane's not feeling well and ilya can fix it i love the way it's a microcosm of this whole show, the being scared and being vulnerable and pushing through it because there's no easy way to love
