there’s a saying, that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. in taeha’s case, it’s only just a little too true. not only did she get san’s tact, she grew into his work ethic, too. methodical, calculative and far too cunning for her own good. taeha had always been the picture of poise and composure since she was a youngling. where most kids begged to be coddled, taeha jumped at the chance to be independent. she was

the daughter that made her parents proud. the only fault in her life was the primogeniture law that passed her over to take her rightful place after her father.

however, she doesn’t dwell for long, a creature of thorough planning and execution, she is ambitious and knows how to work for what she wants. she perseveres through her own excellence. by the time she is twenty-three, a bachelor’s in electrical engineering and master’s under her belt, she becomes the functioning ceo of her great-grandfather’s company, hwoi corp., while subsequently working as taewoo’s advisor.

some part of taewoo knows he isn’t good enough, but he still tries. perhaps this is the pride he inherited from his father or the stubbornness from his mother, but the worst he fears is disappointment. not from his father, nor his mother but disappointing taeha. after all, she was the golden child. and how could he taint even a bit of her shine. no, he must shine brighter. and for the next twenty-five years, he tries to do just that.

in his own way, taewoo is just as calculating, just as cunning, but possesses a bit more ease, a handful more suave and persuasion. becoming a man who holds many hearts in his hand but closes his own in favor of the greed for power. but despite all this, he still falls short.

incompetently so that it makes san impatience, that the child he is grooming for the place after him is falling below the curve of his expectations. so much so, that an ultimatum is thrown taewoo’s way: do better or taeha will become crown princess. in the end, his shine could never out do his sister’s.

some say they’re the spare of spares, yihwa would say they’re the crumbs of her sanity. there are no surprises when it comes to the yi kids, until san and yihwa find out that their last kid is not just one on the way  –  but two. inwoo is the eldest by two minutes, having been evacuated from the womb by a very enthusiastic inha (who was already wailing by the time the doctor had fished her out); they almost didn’t make it to the hospital, inwoo was already crowning en route.

growing up, like similar spares of their situation, inwoo and inha were no different in the stretch of freedom that being spares allowed them. they were welcome to explore their interests (for inha it was figure skating, and for inwoo, idk he was just there), cultivate meaningful relationships and were under a less harsher spell of expectations than their elder siblings. the twins couldn’t be more different than taeha and taewoo, where they were a picture-perfect set of calculative and poise, inwoo and inha were expressive to a fault, clingy and far more rambunctious – traits that neither of their parents saw coming. what set them apart further from their elder siblings were their relationships with san and yihwa.

as the youngest, they were arguably doted on the most. yihwa spent the longest time nursing both inwoo and inha; where yihwa didn’t have the time to spoil taeha and taewoo due to their independent streaks, inwoo and inha ate up the love their mother had to give. because of this, the twins would grow to be spoiled but also open-hearted and more receptive to their relationships, unlike taeha and taewoo who were only too eager to hide such things.

inha is a professional figure skater ( w her godmother being ireti it was basically bound to happen ), inwoo a professional slacker.

they both look up to their older siblings.

for a time, the twins insisted on sleeping with yihwa and san. being clustered around yihwa, leaving a big space beside san  –  only for all three of them to be sprawled across san come morning.

at first, yihwa was against having a nanny, since taeha and taewoo were so independent but with inwoo and inha, she needed mental health days away from them following her everywhere.

these were the days inwoo and inha got to spend time with san, too!

he’d bribe them with candy to get them to listen.

so their days w san would basically be him in his office doing work, inwoo and inha sorting the mountain of candies they got from him.

unsurprisingly, all their kids were meticulously planned ( there were no chances for accidental pregnancies ), level of difficulty for conceiving each pregnancies upped with each one. taeha being the easiest to conceive, having been done on the first try while the twins took a couple of tries. the only surprise was the fact that their last pair of children had, in fact, been twins   –   an uncalled for occurrence because yihwa said she had only wanted “one” more.

but yihwa had the easiest time birthing the twins, they literally slipped out. she practically gave birth on the way to the hospital.

yihwa had the hardest pregnancy with taeha, her stress levels and blood pressure were out of control.

while yihwa was pregnant with taeha and taewoo, respectively, she could not stand san’s presence. just his scent had her irritated and added to her nausea, for most of their pregnancies they were in separate bedrooms because of this. but for inwoo and inha, it was the exact opposite, she couldn’t be any closer – it was a problem because at times it would really interrupt san’s workflow.

taeha and taewoo were wildly independent from the get-go that yihwa complained, god answered and gave her inha and inwoo who would never leave her side  – it was Karma.

yihwa insisted family shoots for every important holiday and san did not like the fuss.

it was just an excuse for yihwa to dress inha and inwoo as christmas trees come winter time.

needless to say mateu was unplanned and they (his siblings, mostly) remind him of that often

after a tumultuous number of months and years, olimpia and jelani kind of get their thing to work and then bam ! olimpia gets pregnant by accident. it’s their ( misguided ) optimism that makes them think that they can handle a baby. terminating the pregnancy would have been a tough call for olimpia anyway, keeping the baby seems like a natural decision.

the first kid is definitely olimpia’s ; jelani’s still trying to figure out if he has it in him to be a dad. olimpia never forgets to complain about how she’s doing so much. in true jelimpia style, the quips escalate, and then it happens. one night, she so much as implies he’s behaving like his father and he snaps. jelani mwezi, whose tongue is so readily dipped in poison, had not a word to say as he slams the door shut behind him and disappears. it doesn’t last long ( a couple of nights, more than enough to have fanni pestering olimpia to forget him ), but he returns, of course ; he knows where he wants to be, and it’s with oli and kai. it’s a rocky couple of years that drive them to go to therapy, get their shit together — they can’t be stupid 20-something-year-olds forever. 

the first two kids are born in europe but they move to tanzania before the youngest is born. it’s olimpia’s way of saying every past mistake is water under the bridge. all the kids are baptized in budapest though, it was not up for debate.

the kids have names that the parents liked. malakiàs is the name of a prophet, olimpia wanted a biblical name and it was pretty. safiri sounded nice. safiri and malakiàs both kind of sound like gemstones ( sapphire & malachite ) so it’s an added plus. akina was a name with attitude and it sounded pretty too. all kids are croy-mwezis because jelimpia wanted the kids to have an obnoxious name probably.

𝐢. 𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐊𝐈𝐀𝐒 𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐈 ( jordan bolger fc )

olimpia wants malakiàs to be living proof of how her relationship with jelani is not as hopeless as people think it is. she has high expectations for little ki and is a very hands-on parent the first years of his life. jelani is a bit absent — there, but not really there ; being a dad is difficult on him and he isn’t quite there yet. but these are formative years for ki. he’s relatively young when he gathers that his dad is not like the ones on tv. preschool aged and already bitter, ki begins to act up. aggressive brawls in the playground, snarky just-under-breath backchat to his nanny. olimpia is sad, but jelani is crushed — after all, it’s much too familiar ! a rough twenty years prior, it was he who was throwing messy punches in the school yard. this was a reality check for him. he’ll seek help before turning drowning in the rabbit hole that transforms him into andrew mwezi-rhodes.

malakiàs has many names but the most common nicknames are ”kai” which is used internationally and ”ki” which is used by family. olimpia usually calls him malakiàs though because it’s a name she chose and loved. ki starts acting out the older he gets and eventually olimpia just gives up. she doesn’t know what to do and kind of sees ki as a lost cause. ki grows up to be an independent adult.

the shame is that ki is the smartest kid of the three. just a bit smarter than average. but he never  applies himself. he does the bare minimum in school. he gets average ( sometimes excellent ) grades, so he has no reason to spend time and energy on studying. 

ki has only one passion: american football. he was three when he attended his first match, club seats to a cowboys vs patriots game, sat on the lap of grandpa andrew ( a big money american with friends in higher places ). he was four when his grandfather gifted him his first football, complete with mini goal posts and a helmet. and how jelani envies ! he envies his ki, who at four years old has garnered more affection from the man that he has over two decades ; and he envies his father, who had ignited a little spark in those chocolate brown eyes that not even olimpia had managed. how dare he ? so he overcompensates. every game day is a game day. new jerseys for each game, signed by all the big names at post-match meet and greets. little league games were proceeded with a feast of ki’s choice ( all too often, mcdonalds ). he does what he feels is necessary to ensure ki would pick him over grandpa andrew. 

olimpia had long backed off, and jelani was never all that paternal, so his teenage years divulged in a rebellious streak. he most certainly has a fling with a zulu ( kenny’s kid most likely ) and he’s bffs with karla de braganca ( a fact, no one can contest this ).

The eldest by two minutes, Mina was declared to be the prettiest baby the kingdom had ever seen. She took that title to heart. Elyse’s image has always been carefully managed and Mina followed suit, guided by her mother. 3 million Instagram followers by age of 13, Elyse frankly couldn’t be prouder of her little soft-power princess. Nicholas is the younger of the twins but Mina had no wish to rule, she was much better on the sidelines, doing her work quietly. Nicholas is much like his father, serious, stoic, no-nonsense and indulgent. He’s dogmatic like his mother though and possibly even more interested in expansion and reclaiming old territory. He’s always been a soft child though. It took him a long time and a lot of tears to learn that his family wasn’t the most loved in Europe. Nicholas is defensive of his mother’s reputation and has continued and expanded her social programs. 

Lady Svetlana Heidi Von Essen 

Svetlana is the artist of the family, she was always quieter as a child. As the youngest she had no need to worry about ruling or politics. Sveta stuck close to her father, the calmer presence in the household. She grew up beautiful though. A face to rival her sister’s. And got all of Nikolai’s influence, Sveta has the same look in her eye that Elyse has, the one that’s mean and vindictive. Her smiles are sharp and she’s never honest with you. She moved to Berlin to go to art school and the city didn’t receive her well after all her mother did to Germany. Weeks after a local right-wing radio host spoke badly about her and her mother on his show, he was outed as a neo-fascist and run out of the country. Svetlana had privately confessed that that had been her Plan B. To be frank, her older siblings are a little scared of her. Most think you should fear the twins but the twins know that when something needs to be done you send Svetlana.

there is no way in hell that dianna will voluntarily get herself pregnant, and the only reason why the girls weren’t swiftly dealt with as soon as she knew was because she had grew tired of fighting. she thought that perhaps she could be the mother that her parents never were, and love her children the way children should be loved. jonghyun felt himself just as woefully ill-prepared, but it was at the fourteenth week mark did they found out that they were going to have a pair of girls ( twins were common from both sides of the family, both dianna and jonghyun had siblings that were twins ), and they had no choice but to fall in love. dianna, in desperation to right some wrongs, and jonghyun, in relief that he would not have to be as cold and ruthless to them as his father was to him. neither of the girls will succeed their father as duke, and both dianna and jonghyun preferred it, much to the dismay of jonghyun’s immediate family. 

controversially, as soon as the twins were cleared to travel, dianna took them both to new york, where they were both raised away from her overbearing family. jonghyun continues in his work in korea, and spares weekends to visit his family in america. they thought that they would have a better marriage with an ocean between them.

nara was oldest by eight minutes, with a name that jonghyun fought tooth and nail for -- dianna had to put her foot down to stop him from naming their twins woori ( our ) and nara ( country ), she thought it was disgustingly nationalistic and shamed him for days on end. so jonghyun picked one, and dianna named the other, in the spirit of compromise. as she grew up, neither jonghyun or dianna could understand just where she inherited her sugary sweet disposition. jonghyun thought of her as meek, at first, but dianna was determined to let her daughter be her own person and not be shamed for it. christened roseanne, nicknamed rosie, she is the passionate girl who loves to help. in spence she rallied her classmates to save the whales, petitioned the government for environmentally friendlier policies, and participates in protests for feminist causes. to her mother’s dismay, she even takes the subway! in the end, she would most likely go to school in columbia and nyu to keep her mother’s company, living at home with her in their penthouse for as long as she could. she couldn’t bear to have her mother lonely. in the end, she probably married an equally soft person from american old-money and they start an ngo together. 

𝐦𝐢𝐧 "𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐚" 𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐥

while nara was nothing like her parents, iseul is the absolute perfect mixture. the name iseul means dew, and dianna’s choice of a ‘trendy’ name without any hanja roots. christened with the english name; serena, the younger min daughter is a frighteningly ambitious socialite, a spence mean girl who could put anyone in their place, always trailed by a gaggle of powerful girls who will do her bidding. when rosie preferred to stay in the background, serena revelled in the attention of others. she is the daughter of a princess and a duke, the granddaughter and niece of emperors, and she carries herself thus. no one could doubt her pedigree. put jonghyun’s ambition and penchant for intrigue into dianna’s socialite ways, and you’ll have serena min, ready to climb her way up new york society. intelligent and cunning to a fault, she secured herself a place in brown, then yale law, dating the most eligible kennedy or astor with a bright political career ahead of them. she thinks she’s gonna be flotus one day and i believe in her! 

EDIT: she’s gonna marry theodora rockefeller and they’re gonna be the first gays in the white house! imagine this: a rockefeller-hearst with a whitmore stepmom marries an immigrant poc descended from royalty??? iconic. gay feminist law-school grads with a mean streak... i love them.

the real question is, will jonghyun and dianna get along enough to be functional parents??? the answer is maybe, but only because they’re apart most of the time. 

rosie and serena were really close growing up, but their different interests and general social circles were so far removed from each other that they grew apart as they got older. but still, if someone fucks with rosie, serena will fight them on sight

the entire family is very protective of rosie, she’s meek and naive most of the time, and if she’s an only child jonghyun and dianna might be stressed every single day. thank goodness for serena.

First child of Gabriel and Arabella, Henrique received the name of his grandfather, Henrique II of Portugal. It was Gabriel’s request to give his first born the name of his father and to name Barbara his godmother.

This is Gabriel 2.0. Much like his father was nearly impossible to keep up to his pace and energy, he has always been a very outspoken and energetic child, running through the halls of the castle and driving everyone insane with every new idea he had. He loves sports and has always exceed in the ones he decided to do. 

At six years old, Henrique was diagnosed with TDAH when his tutors were concern with his pace of learning. Gabriel and Belle decided to shield Henri and kept the diagnosed locked under seven keys while providing all the tolls from the crown prince to go through life and develop in the best way possible. 

He had a private education in Austria with tutors to help him and his parents to provide Henrique the best system to succeed and have the education necessary for the future king. When he entered high school, Gabriel and Belle decided it was best to give the young prince a sense of normality and to experience what school was all about. So Henrique was sent to the same boarding school as Gabriel. 

Upon his graduation, he took a gap year before joining University and then the Royal Army. 

Fun fact: much like his second-cousin, he is not fond to wear a shirt.

Gabriel & Arabella were not planning on having another child but when they found out that baby number two was on the way, they were actually so happy about it.

As a child, Matthias was so attached to Arabella that he would not let her leave unless she took him with her. On the days that she couldn’t, he would not go out of his room until she got home. This explains why he grew up to be such a momma’s boy and possibly also why he was passionate about fashion as well.

Now, don’t get him wrong. He has parts of Gabriel in him as well. His imagination, for example, is just as wide as his father’s. You’d be surprised by how much adventures he made up for himself and he had Biel’s bedtime stories to thank for that. He loved every minute of it, and it’s what made him have a close relationship with his father.

Matthias grew up to be so soft-spoken that some people jokingly questioned if he really was a De Braganca-Von Habsburg. Not that he had a problem with this, being the only quiet one in the family made it easier for him to get away with things that he wouldn’t be able to if he was in the spotlight.

Gabriel and Belle number one priority is to give their boys a very lovely and safe environment and keep in their minds that there’s a complete different world outside palace walls. They want them to have freedom as much as possible, to be unique and kind. 

Gabriel makes sure to keep his Portuguese offspring alive and keep the kids close to that side of the family. Both Henrique and Matthias are always visiting Portugal and also Italy, they can speak Portuguese fluent and carry a conversation in Italian but were never too settle in learn the writing part of it.
