Headcanon: Mephistopheles fucking hates poetry (and his son) and was seething when Cazador decided, on his own poemboo accord, to write their contract as a poem. It was still legally valid and he was bound to keep his end of the deal, but Mephistopheles’ particular resentment of the contract’s format would ease the way for Astarion’s usurpation of the rite.
Ohhh, actually, I'd LOVE to know your thoughts on BG3 characters! And why you draw them the way you do, I notice some creature-esque similarities between gnomes and drow, and also elves (Ketheric had cat nose, but humans (Gortash and Orin) did not), and I assume that was intentional, but would love to know an in depth reasoning! Also, who is your favourite? Whose story do you find compelling? Are there any characters that were "love on first sight", are there those that grew on you?
Incoming behemoth of a post and major spoilers
Ah @unaarista! I am glad you are curious. :) I'm going to go bit by bit. I will be eventually making separate more in depth posts on the races and the characters if that would be ok. Reason for that being is that a single post is not practical for all of the headcanon info. I'm going to do a brief overview on your questions tho. c:
In future I will be tagging this post and the posts regarding my personal race headcanons and design reasons as "Why do they look like that" for anyone curious.
Why does Ketheric have a cat nose while Gort and Orin do not?
All of the elves and their relatives have "bit o' cat" in em. Observe.
Even in cases of half elves, vampiric elves and drow where there are less or more animal elements involved there is always something a bit catlike about them whether in behavior or appearance.
Half elves share the catlike noses of elves. They differ from them in ear shape and lack of tails tho.
Humans (yes including Gort, difficult to believe I know), dwarves and halflings all have human shaped noses even if they differ in other areas like halflings having rodent features and dwarves having mole like claws. Changelings like Orin also have human noses but something is usually "off" about them like size, width and length.
Gnomes and Elves/Drow? Why and how are they similiar?
The favorite? Most compelling story? "Love at first sight"?
Girl fitting all three of these, the universe is deeply unfair sometimes.
I can objectively say that Laezel and Shadowheart have the best narrative and story "game wise" since they are origin companions so the focus will be more on them, naturally. However I would be a fat fucking liar if I said I didn't find Minthara's story the most compelling. It has: an arrogant and obnoxious individual getting severely humbled, elements of fear and overcoming said fear, body (parasitic) horror, religious/eldritch horror and themes of belonging somewhere or to someone. Essentially things and tropes I usually gravitate towards so there's not much I can do here but resign myself to fate. Keep in mind that I got her first on a "goodish" run and am still in the middle of combing through all of her content on a "not so good" run. Gale and Lae are also in the picture because I initially really liked them too and it stayed that way, its just not as an extreme of a case. They are not pleased.
Other reasons why Minthara is a favorite is because she has a bunch of contradictory elements specifically being both courageous and fearful, cruel and soft, conniving and stupid. I can see why some would consider it bad writing but I think its more due to her upbringing being complete chaos to the point that she doesn't really know where to go or what to do sometimes. I really like the fact that she is kind of extremely pathetic and humorous in a way, more female characters should have wet cat aura. She is deep down a very ridiculous person, at least to me. <3
Characters that grew on you?
Shadowheart grew on me the most. I initially disliked her and found her boring but my god is she the little engine that could and did. Featuring the line that everyone and their grandma loves of course.
The gnome divorce boys and Wyll grew on me ingame.
Yes, I'm another "Wyll is kinda boring sorry guys person", but bear with me. Seeing his ideals kind of crumble during the Ansur fight made me genuinely want to try to find some way to save the dragon. It didn't work.
The gnomes grew on me because they have this entire situationship/divorce drama going on while you're wrangling three cults.
Halsin and the Dead Three grew on me moreso due to outside influence. Halsin because I found some way to make him more interesting and the dead three because of that ridiculous comic and drawing I did. Imagining the dead three as some kind of dysfunctional found family unit kills me.
'Astarion looks like Vellioth thats why Cazador abused him worse than his siblings'.
WRONG
Astarion looks like the unnamed woman Cazador fell in love with and had a child with. She haunts him now and forevermore. Because she refused him something. Because she died. The because doesn't really matter.
Maybe Astarion even looks like Cazador's actual son. Who knows.
(I know we don't have a canon age for Blovart, which means we can't really tell when Cazador and his mother were together but just a hc )
BG3 Charachters and Their Go-To Karaoke Songs
Shadowheart-Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler Chosen by Karlach for the pun, and who does the duet with her. Shadowheart wants to act too cool for it, but is all bought in in by the chorus.
La'zel-Bad Reputation by Joan Jett Is not singing on the beat and essentially shouting the lyrics like slam-poetry, not fully understanding the point of this activity.
Wyll- Holding Out for a Hero by Bonnie Tyler This is one of the performances of the group; there is dancing, there is audience participation, and there is raw and unfiltered earnestness.
Astarion- Paint the Town Red by Doja Cat Thinks he's too good for this whole ridiculous singing thing, but he's been practicing the whole week before they go out. He nails it and acts like he couldn't care less.
Gale- I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor Originally wanted to do Wonderwall by Oasis but this was veto'd by every single other companion. Shadowheart chose this song for Gale and honestly? He crushes it even though not one single note was correct.
Karlach- Pink Pony Club by Chappell Roan, Don't Stop Me Now by Queen, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Whitney Houston Organized the event and cannot choose just one song. Is it the most technically accurate performance? No, but good Gods it gets people on their feet.
Minthara- Don't Speak by No Doubt This was the actually just the command Minthara gave when she was invited to karaoke and Karlach made it work when taking down people's songs.
Halsin- Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell "Pave paradise, put up a parking lot" becomes part of Halsin's frequent phrases and says it every time he sees construction developing on nature while shaking his head sadly.
Dame Ailin and Isobel- A Whole New World from the Aladdin soundtrack They refused to perform without the other. Dame Ailin is a HUGE Disney adult as it turns out and hits Aladdin's lines way too hard. 100/10 performance.
Jahira and Minsc (ft. Boo) -Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Elton John, Kiki Dee All Minsc's idea, Jahira hates performing but loves Minsc. Minsc sings both parts by accident and lets Boo get in there
Raphael- La Traviata by Giuseppi Verdi The. Entire. Opera. Uses infernal magic to make everyone watch the performance. Nails it, but everyone hates it.
Haarlep- If You Seek Amy, Britney Spears Gets every single person's number after the performance.
As I said, she's a drow who was pulled from the Underdark, but from whom the Underdark wasn't pulled.
Shuri, in her years as a dancer, often found herself in dangerous situations while fooling around with married men.
Needless to say, the spouses were very unhappy?
But Shuri genuinely didn't understand their anger. There were so many alive males on the surface! What would it cost these people to throw one away and take another?..
