when first finding themselves in the fade, hawke remembers what flemeth once told him.  it isn’t lost on him at all.  he quietly repeats  ‘  do not hesitate to leap  ’  under his breath and afterwards, he’s quiet.  his commentary is scarce, even when nightmare speaks to them.  the demon taunts him about his failures and loved ones.  he keeps a straight face, trying to seem unfazed, but he does struggle with composure.

he nearly loses his calm when the fearlings begin appearing.  he sees family and friends, even acquaintances whom he  (  believes he  )  failed in some way or someone that represent a failure in his life  --  his siblings, mother, wesley, even meredith.  he doesn’t attack the ones that look like his siblings.  if asked, he claims to see the giant spiders commonly found in the free marches.  his cenotaph reads weakness.

as the stress continues to build, it gets to him more and more the longer they’re there.  his fighting gets more and more erratic, aggressive.  it comes to its peak when the inquisitor makes their decision, and grows in volume the more he has to protest the warden staying behind and tells everyone to leave.
