After Berk had started taking in dragons, plenty of other tribes had begun to become more wary of them. (Some tried to get on Berk’s good side, others shunned them from the viking world- seeing their bond with dragons as betrayal to their fellow vikings)…. But a few whom already had a differing view on dragons compared to other vikings- had seen that their ideas were, in fact…. Not as wrong as many would have thought prior to Berk’s success in taking the beasts….
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III had shown that it was possible to bond with dragons, to try to understand them- and that knowledge had helped Berk do just that and thrive.
Hence, many from far & wide have ended up trying to do their same. Others failed (often due to…. Bad methods), others succeeded, and others simply disappeared…. And a few people who had already tamed dragons prior to Hiccup had begun to get bolder after finding validation in the bond.
Since the first massive change in viking society from how Hiccup’s methods and ideas have affected Berk—
Many more dragon riders who had been long hidden have begun to surface.

Artemis let out a laugh as MoonRavager (a adolescent Nightfury/Stormcutter hybrid)(with a light mix of flightmare) dived from the skies, all four masisve wings tucking close before opening mid air to stop the decent and gliding instead—
It was the dead of night and the two were practicing some flight maneuvers somewhere near ocean columns… and far from any islands inhabited by tribes, just the, (or so they think). Diving, twirling and spinning around in the air (Artemis not exactly wearing any armor and MoonRavager not really having a saddle)…. Just them as it had been for nearly 5 years now, ever since his village had caught the dragon and planned to skin her— ever since he freed her and got dragged off by her too, taken away from his post as the island chief’s youngest son.
(Eldest long having left as an outcast after the chief’s first wife died— an unspoken Ghost of the tribe, disowned with his name erased from the records. Long before Artemis & their middle brother were born— Artemis never met his eldest brother, but the brother he did grow up with was just as much of a jerk as their father.)
He didn’t care anyways, life had been somewhat easier since then, just living out in the wild— hunting his own food (sometimes with the help of his dragon), not having to do any chores, not much fighting….- occasionally stealing clothing and items from some towns and leaving immediately before being caught.
