James Huberty

Where? San Diego, CA, USA

When? Wednesday, July 18, 1984

James Huberty carried out one of the worst mass murder cases in American history. Huberty and his wife has a history of violence, including threatening their daughters friends mother with a 9mm pistol and Huberty shooting his dog in front of his neighbors. Having a hard time keeping a job was normal for James, and once he was fed up with it, he told his wife, “Society’s had its chance. I’m going hunting. Human hunting.” Equipped with a 9mm Uzi semi automatic, a 9mm Browning Hp, and a Winchester pump-action 12 gauge shotgun, Huberty arrived at a McDonald’s in San Ysidro, CA. During the next 77 minutes, he opened fire and shot 21 people, while injuring 19. He used up a total of 257 rounds of ammunition before a SWAT sniper shot and killed Huberty. 

Aftermath: 2 months later, McDonald’s demolished its store and donated the land to the city of San Ysidro. Etna Huberty, the killer’s widow, tried to sue McDonald’s and Babcock and Wilcox (James’ previous employer), claiming that McDonald’s food and the employers work atmosphere was the cause of his behavior. The case was dismissed.

Guess what? Someone saw Huberty with his weapons and called the police, but gave them the wrong address. It is possible this tragedy could have been adverted.
