Or that's what he tells himself until an imaginative little boy and his musician father come into his life in a whirl of sound and colour.

He thinks he understands somewhat, but before he can move to explain, Wren looks to Jo with her wide eyes and asks if she can make a call. The Detective fishes around in her pockets for her phone but comes up empty-handed - she must’ve forgot it in the cruiser, which means the responsibility now falls on Henry.

Wren turns her wide-eyed charm on him and asks, “Can I use your phone, Mr. Cop?”

Henry, Jo, and the trouble of sunken phones and do-we-or-don't-we.

The Burdens of Love - @truthisademurelady​/idelthoughts Henry’s burning curiosity over the domination therapist had been an ongoing theme in his and Abigail's conversations all week, and now here they were at Iona Payne's office for "couples therapy." He'd stressed the point again and again that understanding physical domination was useful knowledge for his work, but… Well, the man protested a little too much to pass it off so easily as a purely academic exercise.

Finally meeting Mistress Payne, Abigail thinks she might understand Henry's fascination.

Forever Is Composed of Nows - @birbs-in-space​/island-mountain-glacier  As Henry looks around, he’s flooded with an undesirably large number of emotional memories. There are happy moments, of course, that fill him with nostalgia and longing and threaten to bring joyous tears to his eyes. Naturally, they are accompanied by the rest, the ones that cause stabbing pains in his heart and ceaseless headaches. He remembers the sickness and the injury and the long nights. He remembers what it’s like to be caught up in loss. 

The Pursuit of Happiness - @birdthatlookslikeastick​/birdthatlookslikeastick  Henry ponders what brings him pure, simple happiness these days, and finds the answer in an unexpected, yet retroactively obvious, place.

Henry has been alive for so long, it feels like the word revolves and changes around him. He's lost a lot, but happiness is never very far away. Neither are sunflowers.

Hug Henry Morgan Day fic sneak peek

“I have a few of my mother’s things.” Rising from the sofa to go to the bookshelf, he pulls a thin volume from the highest shelf with careful fingers, brings it back to her and places it in her hands. “This is my favorite.”

The leather cover has no markings, and there aren’t many pages. When she opens it, she sees that it is filled with writing in a precise hand. “These are her words?” The handwriting is very similar to Henry’s.

“Yes. A journal, written before she was married to my father. Filled with dreams for the future.” A sad look passes briefly across his face. “I read it sometimes to think about what our relationship might have been, if she’d lived.”

Jo spends a few minutes flipping through the entries. She’d like to read them, but not now. “May I take it with me?”

To his credit, he doesn’t hesitate. “Of course.”

She lifts her bag from the chair where she’d placed it, and places the journal inside. Right beside the small box she’d placed there earlier. She can still hear Abe banging around with the dishes. Should she wait for him to give it to Henry? After all, he’d been the one to track it down for her. Or should she use this chance to get a private moment?

Hug Henry Morgan Day Sneak Peek

James smiled at him. This time it was genuine as his eyes even brightened, and he appeared to be in a better mood. Henry didn’t want to dwell on the reason why. That maybe James had made peace with himself, and was ready for the end to come, for his final rest.

“You are enough. You always were, Henry,” James said quietly.

James reached out his hand to Henry, but he was already there, grasping James’s hand, holding on to it like it was his anchor to his dying friend.

“James, don’t. Please. Stay. You can defeat this,” Henry urged him in vain.

But James’s eyes had fluttered closed. Henry was sure James returned the pressure on his hand, the strength was weak but Henry felt it all the same.

James’s hand fell limp in his, and so with grim reluctance, Henry checked James’s pulse at his wrist. There was none, confirming something he knew but hoped wasn’t true.

Henry couldn’t take it upon himself to let go of James. That if he would, James would disappear before his eyes.

After a few impossibly long moments, Henry’s eyes widened at what was happening in front of him.

Note: Of course, this isn’t the part where Henry is happy. Sorry for the sad sneak peek, but considering the purpose of this Ficathon, things will get better. Didn’t want to give too much away. Thanks for reading. :-)
