#tbt Movie Review #14 - The Full Monty (1997) I was 9 when this movie was out, which means I was bordering on 10 when the video came out... that's right VHS!!! Now I'm not sure why this was on my Christmas list but it was... and it was one of my favourite movies! Set in Sheffield during a recession, we see Gaz (Robert Carlyle) and co on the dole and looking to earn some cash. Having passed a long queue of ladies waiting to see The Chipindales, Gaz strikes up and idea of creating a strip tease and going "The Full Monty". With a great British cast including Mark Addy, Tom Wilkinson and Hugo Speer, to name a few, and the addition of stripping down to nothing - what's not to love! The movie is all fun and in jest, but it really brings home the hardships of losing your job and what that does to you. All of the lads have different circumstances; Gaz needs to pay child support to see his son, Gerald (Wilkinson) hasn't told his wife he lost his job and its not pretty when she finds out... I think with this movie you just root for the little guy and that's not a enthusiasm! Now these underlining issues are touched on, but don't take over the funness of the story. After all, this is a movie based on strippers!
