great read !! #Repost @oldsurfermags with @repostapp ・・・ Bill, Sam, Louis, David and Sergeant Kahanamoku under the Hui Nalu Hau Tree, 1925 "The outstanding characteristic of Hui Nalu during its decades of supremacy in the surfing world was the great spirit of its members. One quickly learned humility in the company of the world's greatest aquatic experts and performers. Simplicity and Spartan-like training were the keynotes for those who gathered under the Hau tree. The Hui Nalu was born in 1908 when Duke was 18 years old. It always had a small membership, primarily Hawaiians. For spirit and performance and fitness there was never anyone like Sam Kahanamoku! One morning, after weeks of no surf and a completely calm sea, Sam came down to the beach dragging a long vine. It was the Pohuehue, or beach morning glory vine. The ancient Hawaiian kahunas used to bring up the surf by striking the water with the vine. Sam put a wreath of it around his head and went into the water, flailing the Pohuehue wildly, and chanting: "Arise, arise, ye great surfs from Kahiki The powerful curling waves Arm with the Pohuehue Well up, long raging, surf!" That afternoon the biggest surf of the year came up, and Sam rode First-break, wave after wave, a half-mile on each ride, throwing up spray into the air after each wave in appreciation to the surf gods for answering his Pohuehue chant! It was unbelievable!" - Sam Reid in Surfer #samkahanamoku #samreid #surfermagazine #huinalu
