Watch La Melanconia Mauro Giuliani
A recording made while practicing on the couch of 'La Melanconia' (Andantino) from Giulianiate opus 148. It is the last officially recognized work by the Italian guitarist and composer Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829), consisting of 8 characteristic compositions. Giuliani composed this collection of guitar pieces at the end of his life. He transferred the work to his publisher in a letter as a partial payment of outstanding debts.
His composition is played here on a Romantic guitar, a copy of a Stauffer from 1825 in order to approximate the sound ideal of a guitar from that era as closely as possible. A Stauffer guitar refers to the historical instruments built by the Viennese guitar maker Johann Georg Stauffer (1778–1853) and his son Johann Anton Stauffer. Stauffer was the most important instrument maker of the Viennese School in the 19th century. The composition comes from the edition of Edizioni Musicali Berben, revised by José Smiroldo.
