Sutcliffe Consulting Engineers appointed for Hull Minster Phase 3
Sutcliffe Consulting Engineers are delighted to announce their appointment as Building Services Consultant on the third phase of development at Hull Minster. The Minster, which has had its most successful year in visitors (225,000 in 2018) has already undertaken a first development stage in which SCE Provided the Mechanical and Electrical design.
Hull Minster, the largest Parish Church in England dates to around 1300. In November 2014 it was announced that the Church would be developed into a community venue, with arts & culture, heritage and traditions at the forefront of their values. Previously known as Holy Trinity Church it was granted Minster status in May 2017. As a Grade I listed building it holds rich heritage to the Yorkshire region and its development has been a key success in the city’s City of Culture status.
The first phase of development included reordering the churchyard, making the church more accessible to welcome visitors and more practical as a large community venue. The second phase included restructuring the nave to allow for multiple use of the venue- the ability to reorder the furniture allows for concerts, markets and worship. Accessible toilets were installed, a hearing loop and renewed disabled access ramps. The Visitor Shop, servery and volunteer room were all introduced to make improvements to the Minster. SCE undertook a full redesign of the heating of the church, underfloor heating was installed, and radiators were refurbished. Lighting, AV equipment were all upgraded in order to improve the mechanical and electrical specification of the building. These elements all allowed for wider use of the building in line with the transformation project values.
The third and final stage, which has just gone into design stage hopes to restore and renovate the building. Work will include renovation of stained-glass windows, stonework and tracery. A café will be designed and built in the South-West corner of the church. Hull Minster hopes to introduce a kitchen to provide full catering facilities for the church and for it’s community use. Teaching facilities and equipment will be introduced to the choir vestry/teaching room.
The project currently has a value of £3.5m and has received a further grant of £3.9m from Highways England.
