The white, cis, straight male is not the human by default. This bias is where it all boils down.

A major problem in our Western societies today ( I’m speaking from a French-UK background) is that minorities are seen as secondary no matter what. The issue doesn’t only lie in the complex of the “other” but in the idea that the white, cis-gender male is the human by default, and that from that point onwards, it is all subordinary. No one will tell you that upfront, but this is precisely the assumed hierarchy of importance that is being taught to us from the earliest age. There are prevalent characteristics that society deems not only preferable to other, but just socially more worthy of attention.

The worst part of this is that the problem isn’t so much about society’s view on minorities as it is about its view on the majorities. It glorifies the male characteristic, then it glorifies the white characteristic, then it glorifies the cis characteristic, then it glorifies the straight characteristic, in that almost precise order. But it unfortunately does much worse than just glorifying these traits : it also deems them as the “default setting”, which is somehow worse. It is because of this “default human” bias that people whine about PoC people being cast as main characters in their favorite fictional adaptation, or that people whine about queer relationship being more and more transposed to main characters inside of just side-kicks, or that people sigh when we ask for more than just one female hero in a group of five males. It’s because of this default hierarchy, that most of us have internalized.

Society will only fully be free of its bias when this hierarchical mode isn’t being nourished to children anymore, from the textbooks they see at school to the cartoons they watch at home. PoC, queer people, disabled people, mentally ill people do not come second. They are not at the bottom of the chain. They are less numbered, but they matter just as much as you do. Change a generation’s way of learning and you can change the world.
