Also, English is my second language and I have a very weird accent that everybody I know and meet can’t geographically place, which means that my natural way of stressing syllables when I speak English are often pretty ‘wrong’ according to the standard of American English. This means that the process of scanning poetry and measuring meter is actually very unnatural for me because just ‘speaking out the words’ to see where the stressed syllables fall usually doesn’t work because the way I perceive syllable stress is usually non-standard and I’ve had some bad grades on my poetry homework because of this fact. It is very amusing.
Also, I have looked around for a few years now and there still isn’t an online/web-based program that can automatically scan a piece of poetry. I’d assume that all you need to do is take the preexisting pronunciation information/diacritical markings already freely available in online dictionaries and apply them to each word in the poem, but I suppose it’s more complex than that? The smallest metrical foot length is two syllables (i.e. ‘disyllabic feet’) so perhaps monosyllabic words would not have enough pronunciation information attached to them and would actually need some external contextual information that isn’t available from dictionary-based pronunciation information? I know poetry has primary stresses and secondary stresses, so maybe automatically scanning a poem isn’t that simple of a computational task.
