What ho! Lockwood has ESCAPED!
Sort of.
Heathcliff calls after him before he leaves the garden (what garden, you may well ask? You may well ask, but we may never know) and offers to guide him home.
Oh, so now he can spare himself for a guide.
The rest of the paragraph is just describing how the land is completely covered in very deep snow. And by "the rest of the paragraph" I mean "a third of the page". Here is a taste of what you are missing!
for the whole hill-back was one billowy, white ocean; the swells and falls not indicating corresponding rises and depressions in the ground
and also when a fall, like the present, confounded the deep swamps on either hand with the firmer path
And so on.
Lockwood and Heathcliff, shockingly enough, don't feel especially chatty, and Heathcliff gets Lockwood to the gate of the estate he's leasing and bids him good riddance, heading back to his own miserable household.
Lockwood barely manages to find his way back to his new home, getting turned about in the woods (I thought this was in the moor?!)
and sinking up to the neck in snow: a predicament which only those who have experienced it can appreciate.
I am feeling that oh-so-familiar sense of glee when someone from the south comes up and you get a serious snowstorm and they're like WHAT IS THIS and you're like haha wuss.
He finally arrives at his new home, Thrushcross Grange, at precisely twelve noon. His servants immediately flock to his side; or, as he puts it:
My human fixture and her satellites rushed to welcome me;
Augh. Every time I start feeling a little bit better about this book, it throws something like this at me.
So apparently his servants all thought he'd died in the blizzard and were trying to figure out the best way to locate his body - pleasant people, these - and Lockwood tells them "look, see, I'm fine, now shut up I'm tired."
He crawls upstairs and changes into dry clothes, "benumbed to [his] very heart", warms himself, sits in his study with a fire and a hot coffee, and...
...writes everything we just read about this visit, one presumes!
Hey, hey, you know what this means? IT MEANS WE FINISHED CHAPTER THREE!
