Fructose vs Glucose
I may have invested too much money in something I just wanted to try out but I'm already very excited.
Human Fuel / Huel
I stumbled across this stuff called Huel earlier this week. It was one of those Facebook ads that you generally just scroll past, but being as I’m thinking a little more about what I’m putting inside my body recently I decided to take a look at it.
Huel is Human Fuel, and its been formulated by nutrition expert James Collier.
Nutritionist James Collier co-founded Huel alongside Julian Hearn
James has 25+ years working in the nutrition and dietetics industry including 7-years working within the NHS as a dietition. So on the face of it they know what they’re doing. They certainly have more qualifications and experience within the world of nutrition than this fool.
So what is Huel?
Huel is a blend of Oats, Pea Protein, Flaxseed, Brown Rice Protein, MCTs from Coconut, Sunflower Lecithin, a bespoke Vitamin and Mineral Blend, Vanilla Flavour and a Sweetener.
This means its 100% vegan, and although the version I have contains gluten they do have a gluten free version available too. So that’s pretty good. Also the sweetener they use is sucralose, which is good if you’re trying to avoid Aspartame. Although if you’re trying to get rid of added sweeteners from your diet completely then you may want to take a look at their unsweetened and unflavoured version.
But being a wimp and still wanting something that tastes somewhere near “nice” I decided to try the vanilla flavoured version. I also bought a pack of 9 different flavours to try out.
So why Huel?
Well, Huel is sold as a food replacement. It’s not a supplement. You don’t have it as well as food, you have it instead of food. There will now be a bunch of people reading this who know me that will be having their minds blown by the fact that I’m considering replacing a meal with a vegan, vanilla flavoured shake made from peas and rice. But there is a reason.
I spend much of the summer months travelling around the country and doing shows at festivals and fairs. It is whilst on those long and lonely journeys that I cave in and buy fast food. I get bored. And when I’m bored I eat. My hope is that if I have Huel with me I can replace those heart attack inducing fried foods with Huel. At least that’s the plan. My package of Huel only arrived this morning, so I may not like it. But so far in my life I’ve discovered that I only really dislike the taste of olives, so the chances of me liking Huel are pretty high.
What’s also quite fun is my box of Huel came with a little starter guide. In it there’s a few recipe ideas and other bits of info that’s dead useful for those using Huel for the first time. So that’s pretty cool.
Also by ordering through their website I got a free shaker, t-shirt and measuring scoops. So eating (or should I say drinking?) Huel on the road should be a lot easier as I won’t have to find somewhere to plug in a blender.
Right, I better end this here as I need to be heading out the door to do a show at my residency here in North Wales. A lovely little family (and eco) friendly theme park. I’ll report back once I’ve tried it for my evening meal tonight.
Apologies to everyone attending the Murfreesboro, TN showing of Lazer Team tomorrow. I'm going to the showing caffeinated up with matcha from work and I will most likely be a silly nuisance. That is all.
