what is the average human height?

huh it seems google's algorithm has failed me if answering a simple question. this has not happened in a while so let's do some digging.

taking these two factors into account and doing some basic math, (159.5*.496)+(171*.504)=165cm or ~5'5

there's a lot of factors contributing to variations in height seen around the world so there's probably some wiggle room around 165cm not to mention global height is in constant flux as many nation show year of birth as a major factor in height but 165cm is a good baseline to work off of for most layman intents and purposes

some thoughts on height

I’m not entirely sure how I got the idea that the grad student teaching my writing class was slightly shorter than me, but before today I don’t think I had the opportunity to compare. Usually there’s another class immediately before mine starts at 10:30, but not today, as the computer lab we meet in was locked this morning. My fellow students were standing in the hallway outside when I arrived a couple minutes before class was due to start. Shortly after I arrived, the teacher came and unlocked the door, which allowed me to notice that she is, indeed, a few inches shorter than me, which puts my (5′11″) estimate of her height somewhere between 5′7″ and 5′9″.

Thinking about this earlier reminded me of the height traits in some Crusader Kings 2 mods. In the ‘vanilla’ game, the only height trait is “dwarf”, which, per Wikipedia, is “sometimes defined as an adult height of less than 4 feet 10 inches (147 cm).” Some mods (CK2+ and the Game of Thrones mod, possibly others) add a Tall trait, for people like King Harald III “Hardrada” of Norway (known for being tall - possibly seven feet tall or more) and Gregor Clegane (described as being nearly eight feet tall). I’m not sure what the average height was in medieval Europe, and it probably varied across Europe depending on time and nutrition. William “the Conqueror” is estimated as having been about 5′10″, which would be of average height now, but may have been tall for France and England in the early and mid-11th century.

A while ago, when I wrote a program to randomly generate heights, weights, and traits, I seem to remember thinking that “Tall” probably implies being at least 5 or 6 inches above average height. Since the average American woman is 5′4″ and the average American man is about 5′9″, and assuming the height of medieval nobility is comparable to the height of modern Americans (which may be wrong) this would make a “Tall” woman, in Crusader Kings terms, at least a head taller than most women and about the height of the average man, while a “Tall” man is going to be at least a few inches over 6″ tall.
