Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: UNHCR staff and partners join refugees doing aerobics.

In Burkina Faso’s capital, refugees joined UNHCR staff and partners to do aerobics together at the municipal stadium and formed a football team to compete against a team representing the Burkina Faso government for a solidarity cup. They also cleaned a market in an area of the city where many refugees live.

Towards the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees and the related pledges and initiatives - Global Refugee Forum 2023.

The 2023 Global Refugee Forum will be the opportunity to build on the progress made by States and stakeholders towards the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees and the related pledges and initiatives announced since the first Forum in 2019.

Five states, Colombia, France, Japan, Jordan, and Uganda, together with UNHCR will co-convene the Forum. Co-hosted by Switzerland and UNHCR, the Forum will take place in Geneva from 13 to 15 December 2023, with an advance day for side events on 12 December 2023.

Stakeholders attending the Forum will include, but are not limited to, Member States; international organizations; other humanitarian and development actors; international and regional financial institutions; regional organizations; local authorities; civil society, including faith-based organizations; academics and other experts; the private sector; media; host community members and refugees.

The Forum is envisaged to facilitate the announcement of concrete pledges and contributions, and consider opportunities, challenges, and ways in which burden- and responsibility-sharing in support of the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) can be enhanced.

Restoring and Maintaining Order in Complex Peace Operations:The Search for a Legal Framework (International Humanitarian Law, Volume 2) This volume contains a detailed study of the applicable international law relevant to peace operations in the context of collapsed states, in the establishment of safe havens or in a general enforcement role. It discusses the interaction and the often complex legal relationships between non-government humanitarian actors, relevant UN agencies, the warring parties and international peace forces under international law and practice. In particular, the book deals with issues concerning the implications of contemporary peace operations for military forces in terms of force structure, operating procedures and training. The book focuses on the often overlooked but critical issues of the interim administration of law and order in complex operations and on the reconstruction of a local capability in this regard. Many contemporary operational challenges are analysed, including the Balkans and the Middle East. In particular, the book includes a detailed case study of Somalia based on the author's personal knowledge, experience and access to information on the ground in his capacity as military legal adviser to the Australian Defence Force Contingent in Somalia.
