In the “humans are weird, what would aliens think of us” vein, what if it just weren’t a ~thing~ to be able to tell how another member of your species felt without being told?

Humans as a whole are masters of subtle communication. Signaling confusion or amusement to the stranger on the train who’s witnessing the same bizarre display as you. Being able to read emotions in the absence of visible emotion when being given the cold shoulder. The entire range of intricate, subtle signaling that is passive-aggression, most commonly witnessed in a region known as The American South.

It’s just wild that, by and large, it’s possible to communicate complex emotions, thoughts, and beliefs to a complete stranger without speaking a single word.
