"This is our spot, right here! Not all of us are originally from Davao, I am from Luzon actually. But we love Davao and we decided long ago to grow old here. We're old and we have seen alot of change but we are still very excited to see future developments here in the City. We hope to see something like what others have in abroad --beautiful and clean overpass with gardens, like that, do you know that Miss? I hope Mayor builds that here!" ~ "Yes, I know that Sir! I am studying architecture, I am doing a research on Urban Design Revitalization." ~ "Wow! Young Architect! Can I have your number Ma'am? My son is still single!" : )) ~ Subject: The Man in Red Stripes and his Pals Date: July 2014 Location: Rizal Park, San Pedro St., Davao City Note: He was really serious about getting my phone number. “I have my regular clients and I do manicure and pedicure on a daily basis, right on this spot. I get to keep this spot right here by chaining-up my stool right here on the planter-rails. I don’t earn much but it’s enough to contribute money for our daily expenses and for my children’s allowance. It is really nothing much, but it became something enjoyable over time. It is tiring but I have to work hard so that my daughters will not end up cleaning other people’s nails.” ~

"I have been an on-site photographer for more than 30 years now. My father used to have a small photography studio back in the days. So, while still a young boy, I already knew photography. I developed love for photography even before I learned how to develop photos. I grew up with cameras all around me. I wasn't able to finish school and be a professional but taking people's photograph got me through; supported my family and my children were able to graduate. Taking people's photograph was a relaible source of income back in the days, when only very few people owned cameras and cellphones don't exist. Now, it's very different, people have cameras in their pockets, no one really needs a photographer like me. But I still go out here everyday, so that I get to avoid household chores. Haha!" ~ Subject: Manong Photographer Date: July 2015 Location: San Pedro St., Davao City Note: The original conversation was in Bisaya. ~ #HumansofDavao #SinoPinas #SiDavao #Citywalk #Photowalk
There's this postman who looks American and sounds American and he comes to our office regularly. Our nice chat yesterday gave me all the answers I needed. He's half-American, was never recognized by his father, and was denied a US visa a couple of times. He said he always gets a good laugh when he receives special treatment in government offices presumably because of how he looks and sounds. He's given a chair while Filipinos are made to wait in line. He's escorted to the back office while the others take a priority number. At first, he enjoyed this special treatment but later on, he refused it. At the end of the day, he says, it's sad to see how Filipinos ruin the lives of fellow Filipinos. #instakwento #stories #humansofdavao
