Nam Kyo is a summer somewhere in a hazy memory, the sun setting but the heat still hanging in the air and the light fragmenting between leaves. Listeners meet the wise and mischievous spirits of Humble Pious and the Brewdem: they whisper reminders of the things which matter and are good in life, and conjure up a simple world of close friendships, elevating the mind through music, wonder and curiosity, a spliff and a cup of tea, a beautiful garden, giggling at farts, 99p ice-creams that really are 99p - half nostalgia and half directive. In its dark corners, one finds disgust at the greed, hate and self-obsession ruining the world, the futility of trying to change it....sadness quickly denied indulgence. And I would like to say, that of course, bananas are not drumsticks: A Review of a wee EP called 'Tablits' by one 'Humble Pious'
Mr. Humble Pious has released a pretty damned good EP, if you ask me, featuring the talents of J. Billa, Product of Intrest, Slippalong Chervascus, Tipps and Hatmandu, and it is well worth a listen, and thus, I am sharing this goodness with you all. How lovely of me! In the 20 minutes that the album consists of, he's managed to pack in some seriously serious beats and memorable lines and rhymes. Mr Pious has put together some undeniable beats that are more than enough to get your head nodding. It features some rather interesting samples, and his clever lyrics and smoothness of his voice are pretty hard not to pay attention to. Watch out for the brilliant Brian Badonde samples on the track 'Tablits' (if you haven't seen any Facejacker, go do!)
Personally, the opening and closing tracks of the EP entirely do it for me. As does 'Miss Cannabis' with it's opening Nina Simone sample. 'LSDemon', the opening track, is sweet as a nut, the deepness and darkness in his voice seem to be so well complemented by the beat behind it, and his cheeky singing towards the end works nicely. The closing track, 'Happy Place', although somewhat syncopated, manages to work exceedingly well, with it's visions of 'caribbean beaches on a council estate' and it's interesting beats. Well, I'm sure it's safe to say that I'm a fan, but you ought to all judge for yourself, it'd be much appreciated I'm sure! http://humblepious.bandcamp.com/album/tablits-ep
