hi! im starting school at usf in the fall, do you have any florida tips? im from the north and im not prepared for this humidity
Hello! Not all of these have to do with humidity/heat just because Florida is fucking wild and people should be warned. I also don’t live near USF but most of these should still apply.
Alright, Humidity. The Humidity is no joke! Even if it’s in the 70/80 range it can feel like high 90′s or over 100. Make sure to wear light clothing, both in color and weight. Color truly does affect how much heat you attract and wearing too heavy clothes will, not only weigh you down but will make you sweat excessively and can cause heat stroke. Tank tops, shorts, t-shirts, light colored jeans, etc.
Drink water!!!!!! But not water that has sat in the sun too long! It’s not refreshing and won't make you feel cooler. Also, a lil bit of cold water/ice on the neck and forehead does wonders.
The humidity will make it hard to breathe so try not to do excessive/intense activities outside for long periods of time. Make sure you’re breathing properly and check the weather to plan your day.
Speaking of planning days, just because there is a chance of rain doesn’t mean you can’t do anything outside! It may only rain for a few minutes! Also, certain places have a specific time that it starts raining (almost) every day. For me, it’s between 2 and 4. It rains for a little while and then we go back to normal. Flordia is weird as hell but you just need to learn how your area works and functions.
Florida only has two seasons. Fucking Hot (beginning of spring- end of fall) and You Might Need a Jacket. It can get cold here, but nothing like the North. You really only need one heavy jacket and a few light ones or light sweaters/cardigans. If you’re buying clothes, focus on lighter stuff because you don’t need things like snowshoes or winter coats here.
Traffic. It’s fucking horrible. Especially in Central and South FL. There is so many attractions, famous cities, and national parks its hard to get around. Most major highways near the cities are always backed up or basically parking lots, especially during morning rush, lunch, and evening rush hours. I suggest using an app called Waze, it’s been a lifesaver for my family multiple times and it helps you learn the area (this is assuming you have a car).
BE PREPARED FOR HURRICANES. Hurricane season is June 1-Nov 30 (im pretty sure??). Hurricanes don’t hit every year but Tropical Storms are also a threat. Tropical Storms are more likely but can do as much damage as a weak hurricane. Be at least mildly prepared (just in case you can go anywhere) and know where your nearest shelter is (if your school isn’t).
If you are going to any of the parks, a pool, or just going out to have fun, put on sunscreen. You’re gonna love yourself later, trust me.
That’s all I can think of for the moment, but if you have any questions about anything else or specific things, please come back!
