Lecture 20: Here was a song you couldn’t escape back in the day. Snoop Dogg’s tune “Gin and Juice” proved to be a huge hit in 1994, climbing into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The song was off of Snoop’s (real name: Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.) bestselling debut studio album, Doggystyle, and the video reflects his laid-back stoner sense of humor. "Gin and Juice” – nominated for a Grammy – has since become a classic of Nineties rap.
Lecture 20: More innovative rap that defies easy categorization! A Tribe Called Quest’s “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo” (1990) is a classic of humorous rap. Tribe, like De La Soul, specialized in jazz rap and alt-hip hop, and the two bands evolved in incredible ways. Sadly, the group’s founder, Malik Taylor, known publicly as Phife Dawg, recently passed away at age 45 as a result of complications from diabetes. Rest in peace.
